'A Very Murray Christmas' is Already a Classic

by Rachel Semigran

It goes without saying that Bill Murray is a comedy legend: his career has spanned four decades, he was an early cast member of Saturday Night Live, and he is famous for just showing up to places and turning it into a happening. He is as enigmatic as he is mysterious and if you're ever lucky enough to find yourself in the same room as him, count yourself lucky, for you may have just in the presence of actual magic. He's also responsible for some of the funniest films of the past 40 years: Caddyshack, What About Bob?, Ghostbusters, and Groundhog Day, just to name a few. But Murray's entire film history isn't just built on straight comedy, he can go to some dark places. Take The Royal Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation, and The Razor's Edge, for example.

His latest project, A Very Murray Christmas saw its first teaser released and the quick look is all of Murray's career rolled into one. It's a very clear (and loving) homage to Lost in Translation as Murray, sporting a pair of reindeer antlers, looks longingly out into a city skyline from a hotel window — oh yeah, it was also directed by Sofia Coppola. The special is going to be a star-studded Holiday variety show featuring the likes of George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Lewis, Rashida Jones, and Miley Cyrus. All of these people with Bill Murray is going to be so wonderfully strange and the teaser is the proof in the pudding because it is so totally classic Murray.

It's As Funny As It Is Tragic

Just like The Life Aquatic.

It's Self-Aware

Basically, it's Bill Murray being Bill Murray a la Zombieland.

It Is Beatifully Childlike

The wonderfully childlike What About Bob? is Murray at his best.

It is Totally Dead Pan

Groundhog Day, anyone?

Bill Murray Doesn't Have To Say Anything & Still It's Perfect

I. CAN'T. WAIT.
