Christina Aguilera's Most Empowering Lyrics

by Loretta Donelan

Christina Aguilera fans know this very well: it's, somehow, been three full years since Aguilera released an album. However, Xtina fans can comfort themselves with the knowledge that she is working on a new album, and she's apparently collaborating with Pharrell. So we'll be able to expect some pretty sweet beats along with that voice and those soulful, empowering lyrics that are hallmarks of Christina Aguilera songs very soon.

While, yes, Aguilera is less known for her empowering, female-centric lyrics than some of her pop contemporaries — perhaps because her songs are often a little sad and focus on relationships — there are actually a ton of empowering lyrics in her tracks. I mean, remember "Can't Hold Us Down," with Lil' Kim? That song is literally an ode to girl power. I'm pretty sure that all it takes for someone to stop talking about how pop music is shallow and mindless is, like, one listen to that song.

Need proof? Here are some of Christina Aguilera's most empowering lyrics throughout the years:

"'Cause if it wasn't for all/ That you tried to do/ I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through/ So I wanna say thank you/ 'Cause it makes me that much stronger/ Makes me work a little bit harder/ Makes me that much wiser/ So thanks for making me a fighter" — "Fighter"

Many of her songs focus on bad relationships providing an opportunity for growth, which is a very healthy perspective.

"This is for my girls all around the world/ Who've come across a man who don't respect your worth/ Thinking all women should be seen, not heard/ So what do we do girls?/ Shout out loud," — "Can't Hold Us Down," feat. Lil' Kim

One of her most empowering female anthems.

"So much, so young, I've faced on my own/ Walls I built up became my home/ I'm strong and I'm sure there's a fire in us/ Sweet love, so pure" — "Bound To You"

A lot of her songs focus on an obstacle, and how to overcome it — extremely important stuff.

"I am beautiful/ No matter what they say/ Words can't bring me down" — "Beautiful"

This song might is a classic for a reason: These are words to live by.

"Why must we all conceal what we think and how we feel?/ Must there be a secret me I'm forced to hide?/ I won't pretend that I'm someone else for all time/ When will my reflection show who I am inside?" — "Reflection"

From one of the most empowering Disney movies, Mulan.

"I will be strong on my own/ I will see through the rain/ I will find my way/ I will keep on traveling this road/ 'Till I finally reach my dream" — "I Will Be"

This is one of her most autobiographical songs, and also one of her most empowering.

"So what am I not supposed to have an opinion/ Should I be quiet just because I'm a woman/ Call me a bitch 'cause I speak what's on my mind/ Guess it's easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled," — "Can't Hold Us Down," feat. Lil' Kim

This is probably one of the best sets of lyrics in pop music history.

"Many times imitated, not duplicated; can't be replaced/ Na-na-now, lemme spell it out, everybody can shout my name;/ X-X-X-T-T-T-I-I-I-N-N-N-A" — "Bionic"

She's bionic.

"I'm tired of walking on eggshells so terrified to fail/ And in order to please you I've abandoned myself/ And though it used to hurt me when you push me away/ I'm stronger than ever, you made me this way" — "Stronger Than Ever"

Again, the message of celebrating adversity. This is the rare, empowering breakup song.
