12 Celebrities Were Total Jerks in 2013 (Lookin' At You, Reese!)

Celebrities! They’re just like us! In the sense that people can be total jerk wads. You know that bunghole who steals your parking spot even though you’ve been waiting and signaling for it? A CELEBRITY COULD DO THAT. How about the shitbag who, when seeing an elderly, disabled, or pregnant person step onto a crowded subway averts their eyes so they don’t have to give up their seat? THIS PERSON COULD ALSO BE A CELEBRITY. Ugh. UUUUGH. Or what about that customer who only tips 10 percent because they don’t “believe” in tipping? POSSIBLE CELEBRITY BUTTHEAD.

Half (if not more) of someone’s celebrity status is based on public persona. So when you eat a hamburger in a bathtub or go on insane rants that target a group of minorities, your career can be weirdly given a boost (The Hoff) or totally dampened (Gibson) by these acts of awfulness.

2013 was a year that a lot of big names revealed their inner jerk. The real question is, did they wake up on the wrong side of the bed or does it make us see them on screen and want to hurl our popcorn into their big mean faces?

Let's take a look at some celebs who were giant jerks in 2013.

Paula Deen is Massively Racist

Where to begin? Using the N-word aggressively towards employees. Throwing a slave-themed wedding representing "the good old days." And giving a disingenuous apology and scampering off into a hut of butter, money, and bigotry. Here's hoping we won't have to see or hear much from Deen in 2014. Gross.

Reese Witherspoon Wants You to Know Her Name

Hey, remember that time in April when Reese Witherspoon was arrested and was recorded saying ,"Do you know my name? ... You’re about to find out who I am ... You are going to be on national news." OUCH. The actress apologized shortly after the incident, however the whole thing was totally cringe-worthy.

Jesse UGHsenberg

Apparently, spring 2013 was prime time for celebs to be total jerks. Maybe it was the looming pressure of summer blockbusters. Heat getting to you? Whatever the cause, Jesse Eisenberg did an interview with Romina Puga of Univision News for his film Now You See Me and it was epically awkward. After just a few minutes of him being painfully rude to the interviewer, calling her the "Carrot Top of interviewers," he closed with "No. Don’t cry now. Cry after the interview is over, because otherwise it’ll look like I was responsible for it."

GROSS.

Anne With an 'E' Hathaway

I think we all tried to bury this deep, deep in the recesses of our memory. Back in January, AnnE Hathaway won a Critics' Choice award for her work in Les Miserables. What better way to thank the people who gave you the award? Correct them on their spelling and come across as utterly self-righteous. Upon accepting the award the actress said, "Thank you so much. This is a bittersweet moment for me because I have this award, but you spelled my name wrong... I don't mean to be gauche." Yeah, okay... sure. Just a few weeks later, when accepting her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Hathaway proclaimed, "It came true!" Now let's all be glad 2013 is over and we can wipe our heads clean of Les Mis and the trend that was Hathahatin'.

Oh HELLLLLLL NO T. Swift!

Taylor Swift actually called out Amy Poehler and Tina Fey for the joke they made about her at the Golden Globes. The two hosts with the absolute most quipped, "stay away from Michael J. Fox's son," in the post-Harry-Styles-Break-Up-Era. In an interview with Vanity Fair the pop star noted, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." To which Poehler responded, "Aw, I feel bad if she was upset. I am a feminist, and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff."

Pete Wentz's Tumblr Diss

Really? It's bad enough Fall Out Boy claimed they Save(d) Rock N'Roll this year, but then Pete Wentz had to go and diss a fan on TUMBLR by calling her "super rude." Seriously man, you're a grown up. Sort of, I guess.

Gavin McInnes Hates Women

If Vice ever had a female demographic it was hoping to reach, it's never ever going to happen. Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes went on a disgusting rant on Huff Post Live about feminism and masculinity. The mega-knob claimed that feminism makes women miserable (because he clearly knows all about feminism and BEING a woman). According to McInnes, "You know who’s scared of empowered women? Nobody." Them's fightin' words.

Roseanne Joined Twitter and it was Awful

Oh boy. Roseanne has never been one to shy from sharing her opinion as loudly as possible. Sure, it's a good thing to use your celebrity to raise awareness about important causes. It's another to dispel hateful and hurtful language towards the trans community and have a nasty exchange with your ex-husband. Yeesh. Un-follow.

Jonah Hill Bit The Hand That Made Him

First of all, let's all try to wrap our heads around the fact that Jonah Hill was actually nominated for an Oscar. Secondly, let's all throw some shade to the (mediocre) comedian-turned-serious-actor-turned-total-jerk. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Hill had a plethora of douchey remarks including this response about a fart question, “I’M NOT ANSWERING THAT DUMB QUESTION! I’M NOT THAT KIND OF PERSON! BEING IN A FUNNY MOVIE DOESN’T MAKE ME HAVE TO ANSWER DUMB QUESTIONS. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHO I AM.” Uh dude, you were in a special issue that was all about weed, chill out. He also made some scathing remarks about Judd Apatow, you know, that guy who is basically responsible for Hill's whole career being a thing that happened.

Bieber's Horrible Stage Antics

The Biebs has always been more than a little high-maintenance. The pop star was hit in the head by a water bottle while performing, he threw a shit fit, stormed off the stage, and his levels of annoying were unbearable. Until recently when he performed in Argentina AND KICKED A FLAG OF THE COUNTRY. Disrespectful, thoughtless, and all-around JERKFACE-Y.

Ryan Lochte Made Our Brains Hurt

UUUUUUGH THIS GUY. He brought us really important cultural things likke "Jeah"...you know as Ryan puts it, “It’s spelled J-E-A-H. If you say it like how it’s spelled it’s ‘jee-ah.’ But, that’s boring; no one wants to hear that. So you have to really put that emphatis [sic] on that ‘J.’ And then the ‘A-H’ kinda just flows.” The incessant bro-y self-love was more than the world could handle. Until the next Summer Olympics, I guess...

Enough Already, Gaga

There was a time when Lady Gaga's fame was intriguing. She was out-there and outspoken, with what at least felt like a purpose. Art, maybe? Social justice? All I can really recall about Gaga in 2013, though, was her feuds and nasty fights with the likes of Kelly Osborne and Perez Hilton. Artpop was a thing, I guess.
