5 Tips for Long-lasting Lipstick

There's nothing better than a picture perfect pout, but often times, just a couple of hours after applying our favorite rouge, we find ourselves with a sad, faded lip. We know how tiresome it can be to spend a good chunk of your day staring into your smartphone to check and reapply your lipstick. Imagine the things you could be doing with all that wasted time (online shopping, puppy video-watching, Bustle-reading, etc.). The suffering needs to stop now: Here are five easy tips for making your lipstick last all day long. Apply it in the morning with these simple tricks and leave your lipstick at home. We dare you.

Exfoliate Your Pout

Lipstick doesn't stand a chance against chapped, flaky lips. Think of your pout as a piece of art — how could you possibly keep the paint on with chunks of canvas peeling off? Long before you apply your lipstick (we're talking at least a week), exfoliate your lips with a scrub, like Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub. You could also use Vaseline. Apply one coat and let it sit for a minute, then take a toothbrush and brush your lips in a circular motion. Exfoliating your lips will remove all the dead skin that's preventing your lipstick from staying on.

Keep Your Lips Hydrated

A simple, inexpensive lip balm is your lip's most powerful weapon. Dab lip balm on throughout the day to keep your lips moisturized, but most importantly, apply a heavy coat at night before you go to bed.

Prime Your Lips

There are several products on the market specifically made for lip priming, like Too Faced's Lip Insurance Lip Primer. They promise to help keep your lips smooth, making lipstick application as seamless as possible, as well as creating a base for maximum staying power. You could also prime your pout by dabbing on a little bit of concealer or foundation on your lips. Last, but certainly not least, define your lips with a lipliner that matches the color of your chosen lipstick. The lipliner will stop the color from feathering, preventing any and all possible smearing — yay!

Invest in a Long-lasting Lipstick

Not all lipsticks are created equal. There are countless products designed to last longer than usual, if not all day. Try to find a lip color that promises continuous coverage, like Covergirl's Outlast Lipstain or MAC's Pro Longwear Lipcreme.

Seal Your Kiss

The best kept secret for long-lasting lipstick: powder. You use it to set the rest of your face, so it only makes sense it would work for your lips, too, right? Dust your lips (lightly!) with translucent powder. Then, apply another layer of lipstick. Et voilà, all day lip color!
