8 Foods That Have Always Supported Gay Marriage

by Kendyl Kearly

Pop the champagne, and slice into a wedding cake with two little same-sex figures on top of it because gay marriage is finally legal in all 50 states. Since the U.S. Supreme Court decided once and for all that gay marriage is legal across the country, it's time to celebrate. How better to ring in the newly ringing wedding bells than with foods from companies that have supported gay marriage this whole time? Because duh.

Some companies have made a point to proclaim their opposition to same-sex marriage. Cracker Barrel fired 11 employees in 1991 for not possessing "normal heterosexual values," according to The Huffington Post. Chick-fil-A is famous for speaking out against gay marriage and for donating to lobbyist organizations to prevent it. Philly Magazine published a large list of companies that do not support gay rights that includes Dole Foods, Dollar Tree, and Tyson Foods.

However, a lot of food and beverage companies do support gay marriage and have been doing so for a long time. If you boycott establishments like Chick-fil-A, you might like to know the positive side: which foods symbolize a victory in the fight for marriage equality. Here is a list of eight foods produced by companies that supported gay marriage before this landmark decision:

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's took a very public pro-gay stance with its gay-marriage-themed ice cream flavor. In 2009, the ice cream corporation renamed "Chubby Hubby" to "Hubby Hubby."

Coca-Cola

The Coca-Cola Company featured two gay dads in its 2014 Super Bowl commercial. The company was also one of 379 others to file a friend-of-the-court brief with SCOTUS, pressing them to support same-sex marriage.

Not to be outdone by anything Coke does, PepsiCo was also one of the companies to file the friend-of-the-court brief. The company has even received boycotts for its commitment to LGBTQ rights, according to Daily Finance.

Starbucks

Add another beverage to the list to serve at your gay marriage decision party. The Starbucks Corporation sparked the ire of many Evangelical Christians by supporting gay rights, according to The Huffington Post. You don't have to feel quite as guilty drinking a second salted caramel mocha now.

Oreo

Marriage equality celebrates two things coming together like cookie and cream. Oreo supported gay rights by posting a picture of a gay pride rainbow cookie, according to The New York Daily News.

Bud Light

Your party might need an extra kick, and Bud Light should do the trick. The beer brand posted an ad on its Facebook page supporting marriage equality, much to the disappointment of some of the Internet, according to Business Insider.

Cheerios

Cheerios also had a gay marriage commercial, according to Slate. General Mills has announced its support of gay rights issues.

Betty Crocker

Betty Crocker posted a video that illustrated the company's support of members of the LGTBQ community. The video is a part of Betty Crocker's Family Project, which showcases the love and uniqueness of families, according to The Huffington Post. Maybe she could even make the wedding cakes!
