Women Owned The 2015 Tony Awards

by Keertana Sastry

Women had an incredible night at Sunday's telecast of the Tony Awards, taking home amazing prizes and even making history. This year for the first time ever, a two-women team took home the Tony for Best Original Music for the musical Fun Home, which also took home the Tony Award for Best Musical. Tony and Broadway veteran Jeanine Tesori composed the music for the show while Lisa Kron wrote the lyrics (and also won another Tony for Best Book of a Musical). But aside from this momentous and important occasion that will hopefully lead to more recognition of women in the arts in general, there were other great moments that showed women are taking over theater and more.

For starters, Kristin Chenoweth co-hosted the telecast with Alan Cumming and completely killed it. She was hilarious, adorable, endearingly awkward, and just so completely herself and perfect onstage. And she made a wonderful pairing with the one and only Cumming. But beyond that, many of the awards went to women this year. For example, Best Scenic Design for a play went to the pairing of Bunny Christie and Finn Ross for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

But in the end, it was really Fun Home that proved how amazingly talented women are with, taking home multiple Tony wins. Fun Home winning Best Musical is another amazing positive for women as the show was based on the life and memoir of American cartoonist Alison Bechdel. The fact that most of the creative team of the show are women and that the material of the show — which itself is female-centric — was based on such a strong woman, proves that it's about time women are recognized and awarded more frequently for their contributions to the world, especially in the arts and in theater. I hope this Tony telecast will prove this to the world. History is being made, and hopefully seeing women win awards regularly for their work will be a regular occurrence very soon.
