Ariana Grande's Most Empowering Lyrics

by Kelsie Gibson

While I wouldn't call myself a diehard Arianator, I will be the first to admit that Ariana Grande is a very talented young woman. Aside from being an amazing singer, you can't deny that the girl has some real catchy songs. While the majority of her music is about love and heartbreak, the words she sings are super empowering for females — and it's not just her songs that are empowering. On Sunday, Grande went on a "feminist rant" of sorts on social media, sharing a long note for fans to read about the double standards between male and female artists today. Touching on several important issues, Grande points out that, rather than focusing on her music and career, many people choose to define who she is based on the guys she's dated.

With her words, Grande proved that, not only are the lyrics on her album uplifting for women everywhere, but what she has to say off the track is just as important. And her story is definitely a familiar one in the industry today. While I can't wait to see how what other feminist statements Grande might make in the future, and if her outlook will affect the music we're soon to get from her, looking back at some of Grande's past lyrics show that female empowerment isn't something that just emerged overnight. She's actually been preaching it for a while.

“Break Free”

Lyric: I only wanna die alive / Never by the hands of a broken heart / Don't wanna hear you lie tonight / Now that I've become who I really am.

Grande isn't gonna let a guy bring her down. She knows who she is now, and nothing can stop her — not even a broken heart.

"Be My Baby"

Lyric: It's obvious I want to be into you / But it all depends on all the things you do.

If you are going to be Grande's man, then you better make sure you treat her right. This girl doesn't play games.

"Break Your Heart Right Back"

Lyric: What goes around comes around / And if it goes up, it comes down / I know you mad 'cause I found out / Want you to feel what I feel right now.

Let it be known, Grande doesn't get sad. She gets even.

“You Don’t Know Me”

Lyric: I don't need to live by your rules / You don't control me / Until you've walked a mile in my shoes / You don't know me.

Kiss the haters goodbye. They aren't worth your time.

“You Don’t Know Me”

Lyric: The girl you see in photographs, is only / A part of the one I am, don't judge me / 'Cause that's not reality and all I can be / Is in love with who I'm becoming.

This song is so empowering that it deserves to have two lyrics pointed out. Here, Grande gives a whole new meaning to not judging a book by its cover.

“You’ll Never Know”

Lyric: Had my heart all in your hands / Boy, what you don't understand / Is a girl like me don't have no time to waste around.

You just can't keep a good woman down.

"Popular Song"

Lyric: Popular, I know about popular / And all that you have to do, is be true to you / That's all you ever need to know.

I love this song so much. It's the ultimate anthem for all those underdogs. On and off the track, Grande knows just what to say to encourage her fans to believe in themselves and to know their worth.
