This 'Madame Bovary' Exclusive Clip Is So Steamy

by Anna Klassen

Throughout the years, Gustave Flaubert's 1856 novel Madame Bovary has had many on-screen adaptations. From a 1932 adaptation titled Unholy Love, to a 1949 iteration starring Jennifer Jones and James Mason — it is a narrative ripe for reinterpretation. The latest iteration comes in Sophie Barthes' Madame Bovary, starring Mia Wasikowska in the title role, along with Paul Giamatti, Ezra Miller, Rhys Ifans, and Logan Marshall-Green.

For the uninitiated (that is, if you somehow avoided reading this novel in your high school English class), Madame Bovary follows a young wife of a small-town doctor, who, unhappy with her love and social life, engages in a series of affairs in order to advance her social status. And as many know, it isn't necessarily a happy story.

In this exclusive clip from the film, we see Emma Bovary engage in a playful round of cards with her husband and Leon Dupuis. "I win again," she proudly announces. But when her husband decides it's time for him to go to bed, the card game shifts to a game of affections between the married Emma and the lustful Leon.

Madame Bovary opens Friday, June 12 in theaters and OnDemand. Watch the exclusive clip below:
