Crystal Pepsi Is BACK (Kind Of)

by Eliza Castile

Will the '90s nostalgia ever end? Following on the heels of Coca-Cola's re-release of the citrus-flavored trip down memory lane known as Surge soda last year, Crystal Pepsi might be making a comeback. For those of you who were infants, toddlers, or just really oblivious for most of the '90s, here's a quick refresher. Crystal Pepsi, which was first introduced in 1992, was part of the clear soda trend that ruled the world for a brief time in the early part of the decade. It only lasted for a few years, potentially because clear soda that tastes exactly the same as the regular kind is... well, kind of pointless. Although most people shrugged and returned to their regular soda-drinking habits, a small portion of the population clung to their memories of Crystal Pepsi. Now, almost two decades after the last Crystal Pepsi was sold, those loyal followers have been consistently lobbying Pepsi to bring the soda back, and on Tuesday, they finally had something to celebrate. According to Ad Age, competitive eater and vocal fan of Crystal Pepsi Kevin Strahle recently tweeted that he had received a mysterious message from the company."We definitely hear you and your followers and we think you'll all be happy with what's in store," the letter read.

My first thought was that this was some sort of prank or scam, but a spokeswoman for the company confirmed the message's veracity to Ad Age. For now, Pepsi is remaining secretive about what exactly the comeback will entail. Will it return to shelves nationwide, or are they planning on sticking to online sales like Surge, which is only available through Amazon? The spokewoman chose not to reveal Pepsi's plan for the clear soda, but she assured Ad Age that "fans are going to be happy with what we have planned."

So rejoice, '90s kids! Unless your mom didn't let you have soda as a child because sugar made your already hyper self into a maniac. In that case, feel free to join me in smiling and nodding at all the excitement. Whatever floats your boat!
