Lupita Nyong'o With Bangs Is Just The Best

by Julia Guerra

I’m convinced that bangs are one of those particular hairstyles that only some people can seriously rock. Lupita Nyong’o's bangs from her middle school days were featured in an epic flashback photo Friday that the Oscar winner posted on Instagram, proving that she's indeed one of those lucky people. Naturally the photo brought back all the nostalgic feels for my own sixth grade straight-across bangs.

Leave it to Nyong’o to make puberty a beauty statement. The pixie cut with long wispy bangs is a hairstyle that is trending now; obviously Nyong’o must have started it all. Color me envious. I myself had bangs bluntly cut across my forehead from the time I was three up until the ripe age of 13 when I decided to grow them out and part them to the side. Those lasted well through sophomore year of college. Alas, my baby face is not one for bangs; it’s not that I don’t have the confidence to rock them, it’s the fact that I’d look even more like a 15-year-old. I’ll pass.

In an interview with Redbook in October of 2014, the 12 Years a Slave actress admits that she wasn’t always impressed with her middle school hairdo.

Nyong'o tells Redbook, "As a teen, my hair caused me so much anxiety. When I wasn't happy with how my hair looked, I'd spend recess in the bathroom because I was so embarrassed."

Sometimes its humbling to know celebs weren't exempt from the embarrassing middle school memories we cringe to remember and awkward styles that have come and gone throughout the years that we dabbled in.

Don't worry, Nyong'o, you're bangs were adorable. Trust me when I say you were just as beautiful then as you are now.
