'Walking Dead'... Before The Walkers?

There probably won't be space dragons (sadface), but I've gotta say: This could be cool. According to TVLine, the upcoming The Walking Dead spinoff may be a prequel if plans continue the way they have been, and it "definitely" will take place in a different part of the country than its parent show — a.k.a., not in Georgia.

"It definitely won’t be set in Georgia," series creator Robert Kirkman told IGN in a recent interview. "It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spin-off has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out." Amen.

Apparently, the current idea for the show is to have it take place during the early days of the zombie virus outbreak, and show how the world is dealing with the sudden possibility that the human race is about to be wiped out by the undead (as well as the ultimately futile efforts to stop the virus from spreading).

Since the series won't be set in Georgia, it's unlikely the plot will return to the CDC headquarters in Atlanta or the scientist that Rick and co. met during the end of season one, but still — this sounds intriguing and different enough to work, if it's done correctly. I'll be the first to say that the thought of a spinoff was eyeroll-worthy in the beginning, especially after the news that Breaking Bad would be getting one too, but if the producers are able to keep it from feeling like overkill, why not?

For the record, AMC has reportedly refused to comment.

Of course, this could all very well change — the show is still in the early stages of development, and it's not set to premiere on AMC until sometime in 2015. In other words, there's still a lot of time for someone to come up with a different idea.

(And still time for someone to write in space dragons).
