'Another Period' Is A Big Deal

by Orli Matlow

Comedians Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome have are joining Amy Schumer and Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer on Comedy Central. Leggero and Lindhome created and star in Another Period, a reality TV parody sitcom that takes place in turn-of-the-century New England. Leggero and Lindhome star as Lillian and Beatrice Bellacourt, the Kim and Khloe Kardashian of 1902. The series boasts Ben Stiller as an executive producer and is a mashup of Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Downton Abbey, hilariously playing up all the reality TV tropes, but in corsets and bonnets. And you betcha this is great for funny ladies everywhere.

That's because Comedy Central — a network formerly known for championing bro culture and whose most famous faces were once Daniel Tosh and Cartman from South Park — now has three shows featuring female leads. The success of Inside Amy Schumer and Broad City, and their growing cultural impact, is big for women's visibility on screen and those behind the scenes too. (Let's hear it for more women in the writers' room!) These shows are just plain hilarious and if Another Period is like Inside Amy Schumer and Broad City (fingers crossed it fits in with our gals), it will reel audiences in with humor and then deliver a solid feminist one-two punch.

Lucky for everyone, Comedy Central released the first episode for free on iTunes — so while you wait for that to download (you are downloading it, aren't you?) catch up on the series' stars: Leggero and Lindhome. You can thank me later.

Meet Natasha Leggero

Leggero has been slaying the comedy game for awhile. She most recently performed (and killed) on The Roast of Justin Bieber, where she particularly burned the famously short Kevin Hart with the joke, "Kevin does all of his own stunts... he climbs into his own chair, he climbs out of his own bathtub, he goes up on his wife..."

She also performed on the roast of James Franco and hit him hard with the punchline, "I would f*** you James, I'd just want to put a bag around your career choices."

She also had a great web series, Tubbin' with Tash, in which she interviewed fellow comedians in a hot tub.

Meet Riki Lindhome

Lindhome is half of the comedy songwriting team Garfunkel and Oates and along with Kate Miccuci, they perform hilarious songs and had their own self-titled show on IFC, which, lucky for you, is streaming on Netflix.

She also has album as just Garfunkel, including this hilarious song: "Accidental Slut."

Lindhome is also funny while speaking, and not just when she's singing! She nailed it on another Comedy Central show @midnight.

I'm pretty stoked that Comedy Central is championing works by women on their traditionally male-skewing network, proving that female comedians are not just for a female audience. Another Period is funny, period.
