How To Shampoo Your Hair With Apple Cider Vinegar

by Annie Crawford

Your hair needs help. It's over processed, lank, suffering from product build-up, and generally looking like a dry mop. Girl, you need a quick fix, but you are broke because you spent all your hard-earned dough on hair repair treatments. Enter the world of using apple cider vinegar as a shampoo. I know, apple cider vinegar was once the sole domain of hippies, but the times they are a'changing.

A major problem behind dull hair is product build-up. Amazingly, apple cider vinegar cures your build-up woes. When the cuticle (outer layer of the hair) has too much product residue, the cuticle shafts cannot lay flat. This means the hair looks and feels brittle and does not reflect the light (read: your hair is the opposite of luscious and shiny). An apple cider vinegar rinse breaks down and clears away that residue, and tightens up your hair cuticle. This means your hair is shinier and retains moisture better.

So, if your hair needs help, look no further. If you suffer from dry ends or lank locks, try the easiest, least expensive, most effective solution on the block: an apple cider vinegar hair rinse. Using apple cider vinegar for hair might seem super crazy, but we have all done weirder things in the pursuit of beauty. (I'm still drinking lemon water each morning hoping to kickstart my day).

The (Simple) Recipe:

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar : 1 part water
  • 1 part water
  • Mix and apply using a plastic squeeze bottle (maybe your recycled conditioner bottle)

Directions for Use:

  • Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo, or try a baking soda and water mixture instead that has been test-driven with great results
  • Once hair is rinsed clean, apply the apple cider vinegar mixture throughout hair, concentrating on your roots
  • Allow to soak in for 20 seconds to 2 minutes. Rinse, and style as usual
  • Use once a week or as needed to keep hair soft, slippery, and shiny

Maybe you're unhappy about this vinegar rinse idea, thinking that you don't want to smell like a dill pickle. Not to worry! There is zero scent once your hair dries. No one will ever know your clean little secret.

To gear up for making your hair rinse, you will want to get the apple cider vinegar with mother. The mother is the floating strands of questionable origin at the bottom of the bottle. Don't be scared! These are the probiotics and good bacteria that make apple cider vinegar so effective. To ensure you get all the benefits of the mother, select a raw, unfiltered brand such as Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar.

Did you love the results? We knew you would! Good news, you can also use apple cider vinegar for your skin. Try this simple apple cider vinegar toner. Here's to having fabulous hair and skin on the cheap!
