Couple Dances On Abandoned Subway Platform

by Lara Rutherford-Morrison

Here’s your “stunningly pretty” for the day: This video from dancers Phillip Chbeeb and Renee Kester shows the couple dancing on an empty subway platform to Elliot Moss’s song, “Slip.” The dance is a moody, sinuous portrayal of a struggle to let go of a difficult past, influenced by hip-hop and contemporary dance. The intro to the video gives us some explanation of the dancers’ intentions:

Everyone will tell you it is hard to let go of pain... and it is. Since we are children we have been told to embrace the best of our experiences & disregard the worst... But what happens when the most beautiful memories from our past end up doing the most damage to our future? How do we let go? How do we move forward? The past is comfortable The past is familiar The past is the prison I'm fighting to escape

If you’re a dance lover, you may recognize Phillip “Pacman” Chbeeb as a former contestant on So You Think You Can Dance and a member of dance crew I.aM.mE, winners of America’s Best Dance Crew, season 6. In this video, he and Kester move with mesmerizing grace, in ways that sometimes seem to defy the laws of physics. I mean, come on:

These GIFS can’t really do the dance justice, as Moss’s music provides the perfect counterpoint to Chbeeb and Kester’s dancing. Take three minutes to watch the whole thing:
