7 Songs Perfect For Blasting In Your Car

by James Tison

The world can be an overwhelming place: Once you become an adult, especially, life starts to feel like one lame responsibility after another, and the thought of leaving it all behind and running away to Mexico seems more enticing every day. Before you abandon everything you know and love for a quiet life in the country, though, you should try giving yourself a much needed emotional release: hop in your car, set the stereo to your favorite song, roll down the windows, gun it to 88 (if there's no one around you and it's safe to do so, of course), and sing along at the top of your lungs. Trust me — you'll be happy you did it. And just in case you're too stressed out to curate the music for this cathartic burst of self-expression, I have some recommendations for the best songs to blast in your car as you speed down the highway like your life depended on it.

The truth is that the solitude you find in your car is sometimes the only time alone you get all day. That time is precious — and if you're not treating your vehicle like it's your own personal karaoke bar (without the alcohol, of course, because you're driving) then you aren't doing it right.

So get your badass Beyoncé attitude on, because it's time to hop in your car and sing your heart out.

"Super Bass" — Nicki Minaj

Play this song on repeat until you know every word, and then marvel at your own ability to drop mad rhymes when no one's watching.

"Turn Back Time" — Cher

I mean... obviously, right? Nothing is more therapeutic than working on your Cher impression. When people ask you why you have a curly black wig in your backseat, you just need to tell them you've been living your best self.

"No Church In The Wild" — The Throne Ft. Frank Ocean & The-Dream

Really, anything from Jay Z and Kanye West's collaborative album Watch the Throne will do the trick, but "No Church In The Wild" has an intensity to it that pairs particularly well with racing down the highway.

"You Oughta Know" — Alanis Morissette

Nobody's above rocking out to this song, so don't even try to front right now.

"Oh Happy Day" - Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit Soundtrack

Every time Ryan Toby hits that high note at the end, you'll light up like Maggie Smith in a nun habit.

"And I Am Telling You" — Jennifer Hudson & Jennifer Holliday, Dreamgirls

At this point, my penchant for Broadway musicals is clear — but, even if you're not a fan of the genre, you won't be able to hold back feeling a major surge of empowerment when Jennifer Hudson (or Holliday, for that matter...) goes to town on this song.

"Go!" — Santigold Ft. Karen O

Santigold frontwoman Santi White is amazing all by herself, but add the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O to the mix, and suddenly all the world's troubles fade away.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your drive on and rock out.
