Carly Rae Jepsen's "Your Type" Is '80s Pop Bliss

by Alex Kritselis

On Monday, Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen debuted a new song called "Your Type" from her upcoming album, EMOTION, and it's basically the bubbly '80s pop version of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." OK, I'm exaggerating a little bit, but both tracks tackle the heartbreaking issue of unrequited love in an interesting and powerful way, which I think makes it an apt comparison (well... almost). Jepsen's latest offering might not make you cry like Raitt's legendary 1991 ballad, but it still packs an emotional punch.

For example, while Raitt has accepted the fact that her relationship has come to an end in "I Can't Make You Love Me" ("Morning will come and I'll do what's right/Just give me till then to give up this fight"), Jepsen is still hoping things might work out... even though deep down, she knows better. That, if you ask me, is pretty devastating. On the first verse and pre-chorus of "Your Type," Jepsen sings:

I used to be in love with you

You used to be the first thing on my mind

I know I'm just a friend to you

That I will never get to call you mine

But I still love you

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I love you

I didn't mean to say what I said

I miss you, I mean it, I tried not to feel it

But I can't get you out of my head

And I want you to miss me when I'm not around you

I know that you're in town

Oh, won't you come around to the spot that we met

Apparently, Jepsen wants to meet up with this guy so she can try to convince him to be with her. However, on the chorus, she makes it clear that she knows they're a lost cause, illustrating a frustrating back-and-forth struggle I think we've all gone through at one point or another:

I'm not the type of girl for you

I'm not going to pretend

That I'm the type of girl you call more than a friend

And I break all the rules for you

Break my heart and start again

I'm not the type of girl you call more than a friend

At the end of the song, Jepsen's back to feeling optimistic about the whole situation, sweetly repeating the line, "I'll make time for you." Ugh. Don't make time for him, Carly! He's probably not worth it! Get out there and meet someone new! Alas, she can't hear me. I guess she'll just have to figure this one out on her own. Check out "Your Type" below.

EMOTION will be available for pre-order starting Tues., June 23.
