James Horner Didn't Just Give Us 'Titanic's Score

by Kadeen Griffiths

UPDATE #2: James Horner's representatives at the Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency have confirmed the legendary composer's tragic death. According to Deadline, the devastating news was confirmed in a statement:

It is with the deepest regret and sorrow that we mourn the tragic passing of our dear colleague, long-time client and great friend, composer James Horner. An avid and experienced pilot, James was flying a single-engine aircraft that crashed in a remote area of northern Ventura County, California, shortly before 9:30am PST on Monday morning. He was 61 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with James’ family at this difficult time, and also with the millions of people around the world who loved his music. A shining light has been extinguished, which can never be replaced. It has been an honor and a privilege to have worked with James since the inception of our agency. For more than three decades, his unique creative genius made an indelible imprint on each of our lives and on those of the entire Hollywood community. There is not a person in our GSA family who wasn’t touched by the power and reach of his music, and who isn’t diminished by his loss. We express our love and sincere condolences to James’ wife Sara and his two daughters, Emily and Becky. And we take comfort in the belief that in his last moments, James was doing something from which he derived such great joy. His spirit will continue to soar, and he will be with us always.

UPDATE #1: According to a statement released by James Horner's lawyer, Jay Cooper, the legendary composer has still not been confirmed as a victim of the tragic crash on Monday. From Deadline : "Although we are all awaiting official confirmation that our dear friend and client James Horner was in fact the pilot, we are shocked and deeply saddened to learn that his single-engine aircraft was involved in a fatal crash yesterday morning in northern Ventura County... Our thoughts and prayers remain with James’ family at this difficult time. We can offer no further comment for the time being, except to ask that the family’s privacy be respected in the days ahead."

PREVIOUS: Monday night brought with it news of tragedy. Titanic composer James Horner is missing after a plane crash, though news of his exact status has yet to be confirmed. A plane belonging to him crashed in Santa Barbara and killed the pilot. Sylvia Patrycja, who is reported to be the composer's assistant, posted a message to Facebook that seemingly alludes to his death, stating, "We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road." Bustle reached out to a representative for Horner but did not hear back by the time of publication. As everyone who recognizes the name knows, Horner was an award-winning composer who provided the haunting music for many beloved films over the years — Titanic, of course, being one of the most noteworthy.

However, Titanic was far from the only film to receive Horner's unique gift with melodies. There are some films for which the composer received an awards nod, some films for which he didn't, and some films you probably didn't even know that he had been involved with. Listening to some of the scores below truly has the potential to change your life, because, if there was one thing that Horner was good at, it was using music to put you in the midst of a plot or in the mind of a character. He used music to make us feel, and he did it well.

Check out seven great scores below.

1. Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield might no longer be our Spider-Man, and Emma Stone's take on Gwen Stacy might have tragically perished before the series received a revamp, but Horner's score will live on in infamy. Just try to listen to the soundtrack of Amazing Spider-Man without wanting to get up to some heroics yourself. Just try.

2. Avatar

Considering the massive success of James Cameron's Avatar, it should come as no surprise that the film's success owes some of its credit to Horner. I'm not saying that conceptualizing and directing a movie is easy, but bringing someone's vision to life with music that brings the world to life as much as the visuals is just as difficult.

3. Braveheart

His work on the score for this iconic film got him nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and a Saturn Award. Is anyone else feeling a little under-accomplished right now?

4. A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind is emotionally poignant enough even without the equally emotional soundtrack. Combining the two gave us a recipe for success that makes us unable to even look at the title of this film without sobbing. Or is that just me?

5. Jumanji

This is the film that made me scurry past a certain board game in Toys "R" Us every time I saw it for fear of going through what the children in this film go through. Even now, hearing Horner's score makes me remember... and never want to play a board game again.

6. The Karate Kid (2010)

2010's The Karate Kid was good for more than just watching Jaden Smith fight bad guys and then, later, rap on a song while Justin Bieber sings. It also gives us a modern take on the familiar melodies of the original Karate Kid movies, along with some new melodies that are unique to this sequel.

7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Yes, that's right, Horner is also the man responsible for the How the Grinch Stole Christmas score. It's a toss-up as to whether or not casting Jim Carey in the role of the Grinch was a hilarious spin on the Dr. Seuss book or RUINED IT FOREVER, but there's one thing we can agree on: this soundtrack was amazing.

While we wait for news about Horner's status, and celebrities and fans alike mourn him on Twitter, celebrating his life's work and the music that he used to bring so many tales to life will help keep him in our hearts and minds.
