Maya Rudolph Channels Rachel Dolezal

by Orli Matlow

It is important that we remember Maya Rudolph's awesomeness. She wrapped up her seven-year run on Saturday Night Live in 2007, and, though she has been in movies since, it's fun to revisit her sketches and impressions. Monday night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the comedian went back into impression mode, and Rudolph's Rachel Dolezal impression was perfectly delivered on the spot. Since the Rachel Dolezal story broke last week, Rudolph says that people have been going up to her saying, "If only you were still on SNL," much like the reaction Tina Fey got when Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain's running mate in 2008.

"There she blows," Rudolph said when Meyers brought up the picture of the ex-Spokane NAACP President. The comedian brought out her Dolezal afro, and put it on top of her beautiful blow dry. Meyers showed us the TV interview in which Dolezal was asked if she was indeed black, and the pair hilariously reenacted it.

“Let me make this real simple for you. Are your parents white?” Meyers asked.

Rudolph responded, “Wait. I don’t really understand the question,” with her eyes flickering, looking confused.

Check out the video, and then check out some of her other best impressions.

Rachel Dolezal

The side-eye and confused stare is spot on.

Beyoncé

All hail the queen.

Maya Angelou

This sketch is hilarious and also a touching tribute.

Oprah Winfrey

The impression is so good that Amy Poehler's head literally explodes.

Donatella Versace

In this video, Rudolph's Donatella meets the real Donatella, which shows us how good the impression really is.

Christina Aguilera

This is beautiful in every single way.

Whitney Houston

Can I get a "what what"? Alright! Even though she's no longer a staple of SNL, Rudolph still knows how to flawlessly deliver a laugh while diving into a character that is an affectionate parody of a real-life figure. As if we needed any more reasons to think that she's awesome.
