7 Actresses Who Would Rock The New 'Spider-Man'

by Rachel Semigran

Ever since Marvel announced that they would be bringing Spider-Man back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and relieving Andrew Garfield of his Spidey duties, comic book fans have been dying to know who would shoot webs next. It was revealed today that UK-born actor Tom Holland is officially the next Peter Parker. Though he may not be a terribly familiar face, he soon will be. Along with his huge role in the next Spider-Man installment, he's also appearing in the upcoming holiday/Oscar season epic drama In The Heart of the Sea. So, now that we've got our leading man, we're still left to wonder who will be Holland's leading lady.

There are two female characters that this film will likely take on: the iconic and fiery Mary Jane Watson or the independent and intelligent Gwen Stacy, both of whom Spider-Man meets in high school. We know that, in the comics, Peter Parker ends up marrying the whip-smart Mary Jane and divulging his identity to her. Heck, she even saves him a few times. However, Gwen's story is a little more tragic, as she is killed by the Green Goblin, so the filmmakers could choose to focus on the dramatic arc of that relationship.

Regardless of which direction the film goes with its leading ladies, here are some ideas for who would be killer co-stars for Holland. Take a look.

We already know she can tackle the comic book action-adventure genre, so she'd be an obvious choice for the role. Excuse me, a Kick-Ass choice.

2. Zendaya

It's time to re-write the book a little on Spider-Man's love interests. Fans were hoping for an African-American actor to take on the role of Peter Parker (or Miles Morales). Since that didn't happen, the film could still diversify with its female lead. Zendaya is an awesome choice, since she's so versatile as a performer and would definitely do more of the saving than being saved.

3. Elle Fanning

If she can take on Maleficent, she can take on the Marvel baddies.

4. Kiernan Shipka

Shipka would be incredible as Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. Her work on Mad Men shows that she is as tough and wild as she is sensitive and smart.

5. Sophie Turner

Because she needs to not be tortured like she is in Game of Thrones as Sansa Stark. We all know she's a great actress; I'm just tired of seeing her put up with so much awfulness onscreen.

6. Kiersey Clemons

She's about to take on high school in an entirely different way in Dope, but I still get the feeling that she'd be totally dope in a superhero movie, too.

7. Willow Shields

There are few things as big as The Hunger Games, so she can certainly take on the scale of Marvel. At the end of the day, we'll have to hold tight to find out whether the new Spider-Man films will focus on Mary Jane or on Gwen Stacey, and to see which actress gets the role headlining the film alongside Holland. One thing is for sure, however. Spider-Man is nothing without his main girl.
