Watch Bill Nye Explain Climate Change With Emojis

by Melissah Yang

I have fond memories of watching Bill Nye the Science Guy (and The Magic School Bus!) in elementary school, and to me, the man is a national hero. Thankfully, he's still on a mission to teach science today, and this time around, he's working in a language we all speak. In the latest episode of Mashable's Emoji Science Lab, Bill Nye explains climate change with emojis, which is a serious issue that could use a little Science Guy rehash.

Nye dons his trademark bowtie as he explains why climate change is such a big deal. The atmosphere is just a mile above us, he says, so there's not much separating us from the rest of the gigantic universe. Factor in how the world's population has boomed from 1.5 billion people in 1750 to 7.3 billion today, and there are just too many folks breathing and burning the same air.

Our atmosphere already has carbon dioxide, which is a good thing since it traps heat and keeps us warm. But carbon dioxide levels have skyrocketed since the invention of the first steam engine, and that fast rate is what's putting our world in danger. The solutions? Invest in renewable energy and improved batteries to better store electricity. And that, dear friends, can change the world, Nye says.

This isn't the first time Nye has tapped those familiar images to craft his Science 101 talks. There was the emoji chat on evolution as well as the one on holograms. Nye even has his own custom emoji mini-me, outfitted with a bowtie and all.

Climate change has been a popular topic as of late for Nye. During the mass Texas flooding in May, he tweeted, "Billion$$ in damage in Texas & Oklahoma. Still no weather-caster may utter the phrase Climate Change." On April 15, Nye flew with President Obama on Air Force One to the Florida Everglades as part of POTUS' Earth Day celebration.

From climate change to evolution, there's no question that Nye has become a scientific force to be reckoned with in today's politicized world. If there's any doubt, just take a look at the highly publicized and now infamous showdown between Nye and creationist Ken Ham.

Yes, those VHS tapes are long gone, and yes, I'm an adult now. But really, I'm a kid at heart, and I love seeing Bill Nye the Science Guy still working hard to break down science in an entertaining and digestible way. Thanks Bill (insert raised hands)!
