Chalk Signs to Celebrate the SCOTUS Ruling

by Mikaela Gilbert-Lurie

In case you haven't already heard, the Supreme Court just ruled that gay marriage bans are unconstitutional, and we're all celebrating because it feels so good when SCOTUS does the right thing. The 5-4 ruling was written by Anthony M. Kennedy, who was supported by justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. Stores, restaurants, and other establishments all over the country are celebrating the gay marriage decision with beautiful chalk signs placed outside on the sidewalks, because what better way to rejoice than through gorgeous works of art?

Today marks an incredibly momentous day in our country's history. What a great day to be an American, right? The excitement, positive energy, and love are all palpable in the air right now, and honestly there's no better time for this to be happening (except for like, forever ago because this should never have been an issue) than right before NYC Pride this Sunday.

People, of course, are celebrating in their own ways, privately and publicly. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are being flooded with joyful posts from LGBTQ people and their allies, and the beauty in their words are inspiring and thrilling. Sorry if it sounds like I'm gushing — I am gushing a little bit. When you spend most of your time reading, writing, and thinking about oppression in its many iterations, it can be so nice to get a break from the incessant bad news and hear something positive. Something great, even.

I think one of the most beautiful side effects of this ruling is the art and words it has inspired. One particular medium that has been a favorite for people celebrating the ruling has been chalk art and signage, and so much of it is amazingly beautiful.

Here are 10 chalk signs that people have made to celebrate the ruling that will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside:

1. "Oh Happy Day"

This sign can get it.

2. "It's About Time! Equal Means Equal"

Loving the shape of the sign, loving the message even more.

3. "Pride Sale"

Gay marriage bans are unconstitutional and you get a good deal? YEP.

4. "Love is Love"

I don't know why this message gets me every time, but it does.

5. This Gorgeous Flag

There are no words on it but that's okay because there are no words to describe how beautiful this chalk art is.

6. "#SCOTUSMarriage"

SOHO knows what's up.

7. "Here's to Marrying Who You Love"

So beautiful.

8. "Toronto Pride"

This one is mostly for the dinosaur. Toronto isn't even in America. Still, that dinosaur.

9. "All You Need is Love, Equal Rights and Coffee"

It's not inaccurate.

10."Share Your Pride"

Because this one has all the info you need about this incredible day.
