Kanye Blames Himself For His Mom's Death

by Jaclyn Anglis

Kanye West has a really sad confession to make. The rapper opened up about his late mother Donda West in a new interview with Q magazine and made a surprising revelation about her untimely death and how it has affected him. Kanye West says he blames himself for his mom's death, and it's pretty emotional even just reading his words. The "Bound 2" performer has opened up before about how profoundly his mother's death has impacted him in years past, but in this new interview, he reveals such a personal feeling of holding himself accountable for the tragedy.

Donda West passed away back in 2007 at the young age of 58. She died after suffering complications from a an elective plastic surgery procedure in California. When Kanye was asked by Q what he has sacrificed in life in order to achieve such success, he said, "My mom." He then added, "If I had never moved to L.A. she'd be alive. I don't want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears."

It is very upsetting to hear that he blames himself for her death because of his move and pursuit of fame. But at the same time, it is worth applauding Kanye for continuing to carry on his mother's legacy in such a beautiful way. He never passes up a chance to pay homage to the late, great woman who raised him and made him the man he is today.

For one, he has named his own creative education business DONDA after his mother, since she inspired him so much. Since his mother was an educator, he wanted his organization to pick up where she left off, in teaching young people about various creative industries. In terms of his own academia, he also achieved an honorary degree, which fulfilled his mother's wish for him to pursue a degree even after he had dropped out of college. What's more important than anything tangible though, is that every time he talks about her, you can tell he still has love in his heart for her, and is always proud to show it. So proud that he got his mother's birth date tattooed on one of his arms.

And he did not hesitate to show love for his mom before she passed away, either. He dedicated a song to her called "Hey Mama" two years before her untimely death. It is safe to say that 'Ye's love for his mother has been sincere and powerful, not to mention steadfast. It will be lovely to see what he does to honor her next.
