Givenchy Is Saying Goodbye To Paris Fashion Week

by Madison Fraser

The problem with being a 20-something fashionista (other than having to choose rent over clothing so very often) is never having the money to jet off to Paris and Milan fashion weeks, which have arguably as important (or more important, depending who you ask) lineups as New York. Luckily, we'll be getting a taste of the Parisian fashion this fall seeing as Givenchy will now be debuting its Spring/Summer 2016 lineup at New York Fashion Week.

It's a major switch to make, but not one without reason: In honor of the brand's new flagship store opening on Madison Avenue, creative director Riccardo Tisci decided the line would be more appropriately shown in the Big Apple. The show will take place on September 11th and replace Givenchy's normal slot during Paris Fashion Week. Given the significance of the date that the runway show will fall on, Tisci noted that she show will have a special purpose and feeling.

"It's a very delicate day for America, and so the show is going to be a celebration of family and love," Tisci explained in an interview with WWD . "It gives me so much energy, and I'm very inspired by the culture. I feel free when I'm there."

Givenchy stores currently reside in Las Vegas and Miami, but it's been nearly 10 years since its last store was open in New York. Needless to say, it will definitely kick off a new chapter for the fashion house.

Given that Tisci has always been a fan of fronting his brand with American faces (just look at the latest Vogue Japan cover that boasts Kendall Jenner, Kanye West, and Jessica Chastain), I can see why moving Givenchy headquarters to New York would be the next logical step. I'll be curious to see what other French or Italian houses follow Tisci's lead – if there's one brand that's more Americanized than Givenchy, it would definitely be Balmain. Who knows, maybe in the future us NYC-based fashionistas will be able to attend all of the big name shows. A girl can dream, right?
