9 Ways To Modernize Your Vintage Threads

by Liz Black

They say that "everything old is new again," and if the proliferation of retro and vintage inspired fashion is any indicator, I'd say "they" are correct. The variety of vintage styles you can choose from grows every year — literally. From ultra-feminine full skirts and Bettie Page-approved pinup looks from the '50s, to mod '60s style shift dresses and disco-divaish halter jumpsuits plucked from the '70s, you can find a must-have piece from every decade on record.

Like it or not, vintage designs all have one little f-word in common — flattering. And while fashion is about so much more than wearing "flattering" garments, there's a reason that certain styles have hung around for multiple decades. When you slip into something that's deemed "classic" there's a good possibility you'll feel a little confidence boost, knowing that you, and those who wore those styles before you, look damn good.

Although there may be many vintage vixens out there, who have embraced fashion from the past, there are others who are so modernized and future-focused they aren't even sure where to start. Fortunately, we have Instagram to help inspire the perfect throwback outfit. Those who are celeb-obsessed might already be aware, but those who are new should check out Solange and Taylor Swift's IG accounts. Even though they have very different vibes, they are both masters at mixing vintage and modern pieces; one quick scan through their photos and you'll be hooked on the retro-mod blend. Need more ideas? Scroll through to see some fabulous examples of how you can bring your vintage (and vintage-inspired) pieces into 2015!

1. Style On The Run

Dress down a poofy poodle skirt with a casual denim jacket and your favorite kicks.

2. Day-Glo Retro

Make 'em green with envy when you transform your emerald locks into a pinup-worthy 'do.

3. Neon Nostalgia

A master of mixing vintage, Solange kills it in retro pieces modernized by their neon hue.

4. Chic Cutup

Flirty cutouts give a modern touch to a fit-and-flare dress.

5. Geek Glam

Add your favorite band (or nerdy) t-shirt to a retro full skirt.

6. From Tap To Twerk

T. Swift's high-waisted tap shorts give a vintage vibe, but the metallic accents and her mod bob let you know it's 2015.

7. Mix-Master

This is an advanced level outfit, from the paper-bag-waist culottes and slim suspenders, to her spiked oxfords and oversized round sunnies. (Not to mention her stunning hair!)

8. Overall Winner

Everything, even these purple overalls, feels more retro when you add a silk head scarf.

9. Film Noir

An all-black palette gives a modern mood to vintage silhouettes.
