Steal 'OITNB' Star Ruby Rose's Edgy Style

by Tyler Atwood

Even non-Netflix subscribers have noticed there's a new style star on the block, and that dapperly-dressed individual is Orange Is The New Black star Ruby Rose. An Aussi actress with covetable chiseled cheekbones and a riveting gaze that would stop any inmate in his or her tracks, Ruby Rose's style also happens to include a keen eye for cutting-edge fashion that informs her taste in avant-garde, androgynous garb. A far cry from the bulky prison uniform she sports in her role as business-minded felon Stella Carlin on Orange is the New Black, Rose's red carpet and quotidian wardrobe is athleisure-infused and utterly genius.

Instead of opting for staid LBD's or prim suiting separates for her frequent press appearances, Rose instead pairs oversized tunics with fitted leggings and metallic sneakers, and draped silk blouses with drawstring track trousers. After years of one-dimensional dressing, Hollywood needs a good fashion renaissance, and Rose is just the woman for the job. If you too desire a solid wardrobe shake-up, take your cue from Rose's aesthetic with these nine style lessons. And before you wholeheartedly dive into a sartorial revamp, remember that it is Rose's style you're seeking to emulate — not her character's questionable prison antics.

1. Tattoos Are The Best Accessory

If you desire to accent your daily ensembles with an accessory besides the average menswear-style watch or signet ring, you may well be a candidate for Rose-style ink. Though perhaps more painful than purchasing a Cartier Love Bracelet or Eddie Borgo Pyramid Earrings, adorning your body with intricate tattoos does seem to enhance every one of Rose's ensembles.

2. Androgynous Dressing Is The New Black

In lieu of three-piece suits or floor-grazing gowns, Rose opts for pieces that fall somewhere in between. Black silk button-down blouses, cropped jogger pants, and thigh-grazing tunics are all in the actress's sartorial wheelhouse, proving that clothing — like gender — doesn't necessarily need to fall into the category of masculine or feminine. In fact, Rose's androgynous style feels infinitely more modern.

3. Monochrome Dressing Is The Wave Of The Fashion Future

Rose is often spotted sporting attire in a single, neutral shade, most commonly black or white. It seems that in terms of style, black will always be the new black — especially when worn in one streamlined ensemble.

4. When In Doubt, Just Add Leather

Leather is labeled as a versatile and universally urbane material for a good reason, and Rose's many leather-saturated looks reveal exactly why. Sharp, figure-enhancing, and evocative of an authoritative presence, leather wares are always an acceptable addition for an ensemble that must make an immediate impact.

5. Bold Prints Can Function As A Neutral

Despite the fact that Rose has thus far not broadcast an adoration of polka dots, blossoming florals, or any other twee prints, the actress has demonstrated how pattern can work as a neutral on multiple occasions. By sporting hypnotic, geometric prints with monochrome accents, Rose creates uniforms that are visually intriguing without appearing overwhelming.

6. Metallic Is The New Tweed

Forget your lightly-distressed tweed for a dress-up occasion and reach for a metallic blazer instead. In addition to providing a beautiful, light-refracting quality, metallic accent pieces are also an unexpected choice compared to traditional tweed.

7. Dressing Like A Human Emoji Does Work In Some Circumstances... But Test-Drive The Look With Caution

Rose rarely wears what is expected off her, opting for eye-popping combinations with whimsical tailoring and the occasional bold of bright color, and yet her fanciful fashion choices somehow work beautifully to her advantage. However, trotting out a cartoon-embellished dress with platform brogues is an experiment best saved for your hours off the clock.

8. You Can Totally Wear Studs To Look Like A Stud

This just in: studs are the ultimate in insurrectionist dressing when worn correctly, and no one wears the accent better than Rose. If you're dressing to impress, consider wearing a studded ensemble for that certain je ne sais quoi.

9. Ripped Clothing Is Most Definitely Having A Moment

Unless you prefer to abstain from reading Los Angeles street style blogs and scroll through slideshows of model off duty ensembles, you're likely aware that shredded clothing is having a major moment in the spotlight. Rose is a proven proponent of the trend, choosing to pair her ripped attire with more buttoned-up pieces like tuxedo jackets and tailored tops. Basically, if you're dressing like Rose, you're doing it right.
