Dems Snag Mass Senate Seat in Special Election

Tuesday night's special election in Massachusetts ended with Democratic Representative Ed Markey winning himself a seat in the U.S. Senate. The 66-year-old veteran takes the victory in an unsurprising win over Republican Gabriel Gomez, who's never served in elective office.

Important to note: Markey's election doesn't flip the balance of power in the Senate, as Markey replaces John Kerry, also a Democrat. The New York Times does note that Democrats lost one seat earlier this month when New Jersey's Frank Lautenberg died and was replaced by interim Senator Jeffery Chisea, a Republican.

Markey be thrown right into the choppy waters of the Senate—though from where he's coming in the House, guess it'll just be biz as usual.
