'Jane The Virgin' & Netflix Seem Like A Match

by Laura Rosenfeld

If you weren't able to catch Jane the Virgin before its Season 1 finale aired in May, what are you waiting for? Run, don't walk, to the nearest device that plays TV shows and order up all of the episodes of the inaugural season of this Golden Globe Award-winning CW dramedy. Let's just hope Jane the Virgin will be coming to Netflix, amirite? Update: Showrunner Jennie Urman tweeted that Jane the Virgin will be on Netflix, though when it will hit the streaming service has not been announced. [UPDATE: According to a Netflix press release it will be available Oct. 6.]

Jane the Virgin has widely been regarded as one of the best new series of the 2014-2015 TV season, and that's probably because every time you watch an episode, you will find new things to love about it. Each episode is packed with enough romance, comedy, and suspense to please telenovela fans and lovers of a good, entertaining hour of TV alike. With a female showrunner and a diverse cast, Jane the Virgin brings a refreshing representation of women and people of color to the current TV landscape. Plus, with the always-delightful Gina Rodriguez leading this show as the titular character, what's not to love, really?

Just turn on the pilot episode of Jane the Virgin, and you will immediately understand all of the awesomeness this show has to offer. And so much goes down in each episode of this series about Jane's accidental artificial insemination and how she, her friends, and her family deal with the aftermath that you're definitely going to want to make sure you're all caught up on Season 1 before Season 2 premieres Oct. 19.

Obviously if Jane the Virgin was available on Netflix, that would make things so much easier. It's the quintessential Netflix title too, so it's a no-brainer to have it on the streaming platform. Because Jane the Virgin often acts as an homage to telenovelas, it's the perfect show to marathon, with each episode ending on a cliffhanger. The fact that it's a substantive-yet-lighthearted show also makes it a must for your summer TV queue.

Unfortunately, Jane the Virgin isn't currently available on Netflix Instant Streaming, and no official announcement regarding Jane the Virgin's addition to the streaming platform has been made yet. However, that doesn't mean it never will be. In fact, it seems likely that Jane the Virgin will be available on Netflix sooner rather than later.

The CW has already given distribution rights to Netflix for many of its other original series, including Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, and Hart of Dixie. It's likely that the network will continue this relationship and add Jane the Virgin to that list in the future.

However, when that will be is anyone's guess. The most recent seasons of other current CW shows like The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Arrow haven't hit Netflix yet, even though all of their season finales aired in May as well. Jane the Virgin is currently available for digital download from places like Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, and iTunes. However, Season 1 does not come out on DVD and Blu-ray until Sept. 29. For that reason, it's possible that The CW could wait until that release date or after it to allow the series to be streamed on Netflix, as it did with Season 2 of Arrow last year.

If you don't have the patience or the money to watch Season 1 through one of the previously-discussed options, there are a couple of places through which you can stream it for free right now. Season 1 episodes of Jane the Virgin are currently available to stream on The CW's official website and Hulu, but this only includes the first four episodes and the season finale.

All of this isn't great news for those hoping to marathon the series right now, but even a little Jane in your life is worth a lot more than entire seasons of most other shows out there.
