'Suicide Squad' Makeup And Costumes Are So Creepy

by Julia Guerra

For those who of you lucky enough to have been in attendance at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, there is a solid chance you were able to catch a glimpse of the trailer for one of Hollywood's most anticipated action thrillers. Luckily for us, Warner Bros has shared the wealth and the first trailer for Suicide Squad has been released. It's pretty obvious David Ayer has created quite the disturbing masterpiece, and for all of us super villain fans out there, August of 2016 can't come soon enough.

Suicide Squad will be the third installment of DC Comic's shared universe films and will focus on the American comic's legendary super villain squad Task Force X. The trailer is our first in-depth look at the film, and while the story line looks insanely epic, I was mesmerized by each character's haunting appearance. Don't even try to tell me the Joker's bold (bloody) red lips upturned into a metallic smile didn't give you chills.

The dramatic extent in which makeup is capable of completely transforming someone's facial features fascinated me. Most of the time we see characters on screen and accredit their fictional embodiment to movie magic, oftentimes forgetting that behind the scenes are a slew of makeup artists crafting the personas that come alive on camera.

Granted the trailer gives us less than a five minute teaser, but every character introduced themselves in true villainous form. Check out fives of the best character looks from the Suicide Squad trailer. I wont blame you if you decide to leave your lights on tonight.

1. Jared Leto as The Joker

Okay, so he's no Heath Ledger, but Jared Leto has got the Joker look down pat. Having previously hit the streets of Toronto sporting a wild head of green hair for the role, I knew his Joker style was bound to be legit. I'm a little disappointed that his face isn't completely covered in white powder, but he's got all the right shines in all the right places.

Also a significant difference between Suicide Squad and The Dark Knight's Joker is that in this film, Leto's joker is super tatted. Feedback regarding the fact that Batman's legendary nemesis is now covered in ink varies, however I'm pretty into it. With "Damaged" written on his forehead and scribbles of "Hahaha" on his chest, the lettering makes him look that much more heinous, and oddly attractive.

2. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

Suicide Squad hit the nail on the head casting Margot Robbie as the villainous sex symbol Harley Quinn. There's no denying that even as a psychotic murderess, Robbie looks downright hot. Reppin' some Baby Spice pig tails with just a hint of blue and pink tips, I'm willing to guess you could assume what she uses to lure in her victims.

3. Cara Delevingne as Enchantress

Never have you ever seen model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne look so manic — and let's face it, we've seen her showcase some pretty out there pieces from a handful of designers. Looking very un-supermodel like as Enchantress, some kind of evil witch from the black lagoon comes to mind, and it is absolutely fantastic.

4. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc

I can only imagine the amount of time this man must have spent sitting in a makeup artist's chair to achieve this level of detail. With this dry, crusting face and dark hood to put it into focus, Killer Croc does not even begin to serve this man's look justice.

5. Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg

If this man were bounding towards me on the streets of Toronto late at night, I would probably pee my pants. This circles back to my previous point about tattoos. For some reason, especially when they are placed strategically on parts of the face to make you look like a skeleton, tattoos just make a person look hard. Joel Kinnaman does not look hard. He looks brutal.
