Can Amy Schumer Really Win An Acting Emmy?

by Orli Matlow

Amy Schumer is everything right now, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences seems to agree. Amy Schumer has been nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the third season of Inside Amy Schumer. She was also nominated for Outstanding Writing as part of the show's writing staff and for Outstanding Direction for her brilliant co-direction of the " 12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer" episode, which puts a distinct spin on the classic film. While the nominations are undeniably great, is there a chance that Amy Schumer will actually win the acting Emmy?

Schumer's nomination for comedy actress came as bit as a surprise. Most critics thought the nomination, which comes alongside ones for Amy Poehler, Lisa Kudrow, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Lily Tomlin, would go to either Ellie Kemper for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or Gina Rodriguez for Jane the Virgin. It was also a surprise considering that Inside Amy Schumer is a sketch show rather than a straight-up sitcom, but Schumer's amount of screen time and the fact that she's the creative force behind the show makes it undeniable that she is a lead actress putting in as much work as the other women on their respective series.

The nomination is a huge vote of confidence in Schumer's talent, and the fact that she is nominated for writing and directing as well demonstrates that the Academy is truly a big fan.

Here are the main reasons that Schumer's nomination might actually turn into a win:

Her Nominations Are Already Challenging The Status Quo

Jim Parsons, who has won four Emmys for his role as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, was not nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series this year. On top of that, the show wasn't nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, after consecutive years of being nominated. This shows that the Emmys are beginning to switch things up and challenge previous trends, and if this pattern continues, current incumbent Julia Louis-Dreyfus might not take the trophy again.

The Emmys Are Beginning To Favor Sketch Shows

The Academy recently split sketch comedy shows and talk shows into two different categories, so shows like Inside Amy Schumer and Saturday Night Live are no longer competing with The Daily Show and The Tonight Show. This indicates that the Academy is respecting sketch comedy as an art form, and they might honor it with a win for Schumer.

Her Performance Is The Most Versatile

By virtue of the fact that she plays multiple different characters, Amy Schumer shows the most range of any actress nominated. She is a rap star in "Milk Milk Lemonade" and an emotional defendant in "12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer." In the show and beyond, she is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with.
