Here Are All The Charges James Holmes Is Guilty Of

On Thursday, three years after he fired into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, gunman James Holmes was found guilty of every charge levied against him by prosecutors — all 166 of them. While there was never any question that Holmes was the man who had murdered 12 people and injured 70 more when he went on a shooting rampage before a showing of The Dark Knight Rises, questions over his mental state underpinned three years of pretrial psychiatric evaluations and an exhaustive jury selection process. If he had been found not guilty by reason of insanity, Holmes still would have spent the rest of his life in a psychiatric facility.

Thanks to a handy liveblog from The Denver Post, which updated a list every single one of Holmes' 166 charges with the jury's decision as it happened — the reading out of said decisions took more than an hour — a real-time "Verdict Tracker" was available during the reading. However, as predicted, the jury found Holmes guilty — as opposed to not guilty by reason of insanity — meaning that in spite of the defense's claims that Holmes was schizophrenic and suffering a psychotic break during the shooting, the jury believed that Holmes was aware of what he was doing as he committed the murders. Psychiatrists who testified at his trial generally agreed that, although Holmes likely suffered from some kind of mental illness, he was legally sane at the time of the shooting.

Holmes faced two charges of murder for every victim he murdered and two charges of attempted murder for every victim he wounded, due to the severity of his crimes. He was also charged and found guilty of possession of explosive devices and of inciting violence.
