Watch Carly Rae Jepsen's New Music Video

by Alex Kritselis

On Friday, Canadian pop genius Carly Rae Jepsen dropped her much-anticipated "Run Away With Me" music video. Hooray! Unfortunately, the cutesy treatment doesn't even come close to doing the epic and emotional new single justice. Boo! How terribly disappointing. In the clip, we watch as Jepsen leads (read: drags) an unseen travel companion by the hand as they visit a series of familiar tourist attractions across the globe (Central Park, the Eiffel Tower, the streets of Tokyo, etc.) All the while, she never stops skipping, dancing, twirling, or giggling — she's a ball of boundless energy and high jinks. Generally speaking, I find the 29-year-old singer to be pretty adorable, but here, her antics feel frustratingly forced.

Ultimately, the "Run Away With Me" video never reaches the song's dizzying emotional highs. In fact, it doesn't even try. When it's all over, you'll likely shrug your shoulders and think to yourself, "Huh. That was OK... I guess?" This track has the potential to be one of the biggest hits of Jepsen's career — and I was expecting so much more. Hopefully, the mediocre visual won't negatively affect the tune's chart potential.

"Run Away With Me" serves as the second official single from Jepsen's new album, EMOTION. (Curiously, the LP premiered in Japan at the end of June — but it won't be released stateside until Aug. 21.) Check out the video below. It pains me to write this, but when it's finished, you should probably just forget what you saw and make up something better in your head.

"Run Away With Me" is available on iTunes and Spotify now.
