Amy Schumer Talks About *That* Bill Cosby Sketch

Is calling someone your hero still a thing? Because I think I'm ready to bestow that title on Amy Schumer for calling out Bill Cosby in an Inside Amy Schumer sketch without the hubris to think that her sketch might change the outcome of the current scandal surrounding Cosby. Oh and I also want to praise her for being body positive. And for being generally hilarious. And for putting out a movie that I'm pretty sure is going to be my new favorite thing ever. And having the absolute best attitude about comedy every damn day. OK, she's basically done everything required of a human elevated to hero status, so kudos to her. Her comments to GQ about her thoughts behind the Inside Amy Cosby sketch are just the icing on the cake at this point.

Part of Schumer's schtick is that she pretends to be a bit brainless, so sometimes I forget how on top of it she really is. But she's very savvy and upon reading her cover story in GQ, where she talks about that Inside Amy Schumer Cosby sketch where she plays an attorney defending Bill Cosby from the over 30 accusations of sexual assault. When the interviewer asked Schumer if she hoped the comedian saw it, she responded:

I don't care. I think he's so far… [She lets the thought trail off.] I guess I do hope people see it who are vilifying the women coming forward just so they can enjoy The Cosby Show still.

See? I just feel like that's the absolute perfect response. She doesn't have some overblown idea of herself, and knows that her sketch isn't going to change Cosby's statements regarding the accusations, no matter how great the comedy writing is. Here it is now, so you can have a look for yourself:

To date, Cosby has been accused of sexual assault by over 30 women, with allegations ranging from groping to drugging to sexual assault and rape. For years, these accusations went unaddressed, but the voices of the alleged victims are finally being heard, especially in light of statements that Cosby made during a 2005 deposition for a case brought by Andrea Constand, he admitted to obtaining Quaaludes to use to have sex with women. The transcripts of that case, unearthed by the AP and The Hollywood Reporter, show Constand alleging that Cosby drugged and raped her. Cosby's lawyers released the following statement in response to the documents being unsealed:

The only reason Mr. Cosby settled was because it would have been embarrassing in those days to put all those women on the stand and his family had no clue. That would have been very hurtful.

Prior to that, Cosby's lawyers responded to the claims from the over 30 women accusing Cosby of various forms of assault. Here's what his attorney John P. Schmitt had to say less than a year ago:

Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced. The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives.

At the end of the day, Schumer knows that comedy isn't about forcing other people to see things your way, it's about being honest and making your own voice heard, and hoping that people laugh their way along on that journey with you. Let's hear it one more time for Schumer and her brass effing balls, because we're lucky to have them.
