What Song Is In 'The Good Dinosaur' Trailer?

by James Tison

Pixar released the trailer for their new full-length feature The Good Dinosaur today, and it looks like we have yet another masterfully created tearjerker from Pixar that we can look forward. As per usual, the Pixar trailer features glimmering animation, heartfelt characters, and swelling emotion. However, if you've seen it, then not only are you probably still drying your eyes, but you're probably wondering: what song is in The Good Dinosaur trailer? What's it called, who's it by, and how can you get it for yourself?

Well, good news: Never fear, the answers are here!

The movie itself is the story of an orphaned dinosaur named Arlo who loses his way from his tribe and, with the help of a human child, tries to find his way back home (obviously, Pixar is writing an alternate version of history where humans and dinosaurs coexisted). The movie looks like The Land Before Time meets Fox and the Hound, and promises to be more touching than both of those movies combined. The trailer is bolstered by a really great song, the music of which matches the hyperemotional nature of the storyline and the lyrics speak to the themes of loneliness, homesickness, and friendship experienced by the characters.

So, what's the song? It turns out, the song is from none other than Icelandic folk pop band Of Monsters and Men. It's called "Crystals," and it's the first song off of their new album Beneath the Skin. The album is the much-anticipated follow up to their first My Head is an Animal; it came out in June, and if "Crystals" is any indication then it's definitely work checking out.

If you're thinking to yourself, "Who is Of Monsters and Men?" don't worry: chances are good you've heard at least one of their singles without realizing who they are. "Little Talks" and "Mountain Sound" were the biggest hits off their first album, the former of which made it to #1 on the US Alternative Charts. "Crystals" matches the heightened emotional stakes of their past endeavors, although it has considerably fewer brass instruments in the mix. The song is a particularly good match for the overtly sentimental trailer.

The Good Dinosaur is due in theaters on Thanksgiving later this year. When it's released, it will be the first time that Pixar has released two movies in the same year ( Inside Out was the first); since it's pretty much guaranteed that both will be nominated for an Academy Award, that means we might even see Pixar competing against itself for the Best Animated Feature award. Here's hoping Of Monsters and Men writes an original song for the film and gets a nomination of its own!
