Is Selena's New Album About Justin Bieber?

by Alex Kritselis

STOP THE PRESSES: In a video posted to her Instagram account on Tuesday afternoon, Selena Gomez announced that her new album, Revival, will be released on Oct. 9. What an intriguing title! I wonder who or what inspired it? Now, I know what you're (probably) thinking: "OMG. This new Selena Gomez album is definitely all about Justin Bieber." But please, remember: Selena Gomez's life is about so much more than just Justin @#$%ing Bieber! True, the Internet seems to think the two have "revived" their relationship once again — but when does the Internet NOT think that? Believe it or don't, the "Good For You" hit-maker has thoughts and feelings that have absolutely nothing to do with the person she's dating. Sheesh. So, with that being said, we can return to our question: What does Selena Gomez's new album title mean?

Gomez did reveal that past romantic relationships have influenced her second solo effort to an extent during an interview with radio host JoJo Wright in June, but she stressed that it's primarily about her "rebirth." What kind of rebirth, you ask? Well, for starters, the singer left the Disney-owned Hollywood Records and signed a new recording contract with Interscope at the end of 2014. In the aforementioned radio interview, she seemed to suggest that she now has creative control over her music career for "the first time":

I have people behind me that support my vision completely, and now, I’m kind of on my own in a way and this is the first time that I’ve ever grabbed ahold of something. I’m not going to let anybody else try to alter my vision or tell me I need to do something. I’m very confident in this record and you can hear it. But I’m vulnerable, I’m real, and I think it just shows a different side of me, and I’m really excited, and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Though she was light on details, Gomez also said she "finally" feels like she has her "own voice":

Now, coming into being 23 years old, I've been through some real stuff and now I can finally have my own voice. So, in a way, I feel like I'm just starting.

To review: Selena Gomez's new album, Revival, is about the many different ways she's grown and changed as a human being and artist over the past several years. Yes, she may touch on her relationship with the Biebs — but that's certainly not the only thing we're going to hear her singing about. I'm so glad we got that cleared up, aren't you?

Stay tuned for more details.
