Spidey's Next Villain Is an Odd Choice

by Anna Klassen

Spidey's back in town, and he's got three new villains to conquer with little more than a sticky wad of spidey rope and a spandex suit. A new poster shows Peter Parker facing off against big name villains: Electro, Rhino, and... Green Goblin. Traditionally portrayed by Harry Osborn's father, the real spoiler can be seen in the details of the poster: It appears that in this version of the story, Goblin will be played by Harry himself! If you squint, or zoom in, or just look at the cropped, close-up versions of the posters online, you can tell that Goblin's malevolent face is none other than Parker's BFF, played by Dane DeHaan.

Let me interject with saying how much I was originally against any sort of rebooting of the Spider-Man franchise. Toby McGuire gave his best swing at it in 2002 (then again in 2004 and 2007), so it seemed unnecessary and foolish to reboot the fresh-to-DVD franchise only five years later. But while last year's The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield as the titular role, didn't offer a deep look into the superhero's psyche (unlike the Batman franchise), it was a hell of a lot of fun, and felt, as it should — like a comic book.

That being said, this casting news turns the traditional comic book story on its head. In 2002's version of Spidey, Dr. Osborn transformed into the monster, unbeknownst to his son. It appears this version will skip that plot line and head straight to Harry transforming into the ultimate frenemy. Tremendously acted by Willem DaFoe in the 2002 version, DeHaan, the up-and-coming actor you've seen in The Place Beyond the Pines and Chronicle, has some pointy, er, big, shoes to fill. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres May 2, 2014. Check out the poster below:
