Brian Tanen teased that Season 3 has a “fulfilling ending,” either way.

Though Hulu renewed its LGBTQ+ coming-of-age drama Love, Victor last July, the streamer revealed in February that the series would end with Season 3. Premiering all eight final episodes on June 15, Love, Victor’s final season finds the titular character, played by Michael Cimino, “going on a journey of self-discovery — not only deciding who he wants to be with, but more broadly, who he wants to be,” per Hulu’s description. With their high school years also coming to a close, Victor and his friends, meanwhile, are also “faced with a new set of problems that they must work through to make the best choices for their futures.”

Without giving any spoilers, showrunner Brian Tanen recently gave viewers hope for a happy conclusion to the offshoot of 2018’s Love, Simon movie. “I think people will be very satisfied and happy with our endings,” he told TV Insider. “We wanted to balance our drama with a sense of optimism, hopefulness, and wish-fulfillment. Our community really needs that. We want to people to leave with a feeling that these kids are going to be all right.”

That’s especially true regarding the show’s protagonist, Tanen added: “Victor went on a journey of coming out in Season 1. In Season 2, he had a relationship. And, now, in Season 3, it’s about Victor’s journey of self-discovery. He’s going to be asking who he wants to be in the world. He’s gone from someone who needed advice from Simon [Nick Robinson] early on to someone who is a leader in his own life and can offer advice to other people.”

Though Love, Simon is ending with Season 3, Tanen said he’s “down for anything” in terms of revisiting the characters in another possible spinoff. “It’s bittersweet,” he said. “I’m glad that we can wrap it up and give everyone a fulfilling ending. I’d love to see it continue.”

One cliffhanger that Season 3 immediately addresses is whether Victor chose Benji (George Sear) or Rahim (Anthony Keyvan). Though he told Hollywood Life that he already knew whose door his character showed up at in the Season 2 finale, Cimino teased that “there’s definitely some bumps in the road, and there are some twists and turns that you might not expect.” Either way, the actor is “happy with how it ends,” despite wishing he’d “had some more time” with the characters.

“This season, Victor’s very much learning how to embrace who he is and applying the lessons that he’s learned over the past few seasons,” he added. “It’s like, Victor’s learned how to accept who he is. He’s learned how to kind of stick up for himself, and now he’s applying those lessons to his life, not just like with his family or in these bubbles that were surrounding him before, but in different situations that he might not have known how to navigate prior.”

Sear, for his part, told the outlet that knowing the show was ending ultimately shaped their approach to Season 3. “I think it comes full circle, and because we knew it was the end, we also got time to sort of grieve the whole thing,” he said.

Given Tanen’s openness to Love, Victor continuing in some form, however, there’s always hope that this isn’t really goodbye.
