The new Disney+ series Loki may center around the antics of the Asgardian God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston), but it also promises to introduce a variety of new characters to the MCU — most notably Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius. Mobius is an employee at the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic agency that exists outside of space and time and is responsible for managing the Multiverse and protecting the natural order of the timeline. In Loki, it appears as though Mobius is the one responsible for recruiting Loki to help fix the damage he caused in the timeline by stealing the Tesseract in 2012 and jumping through a wormhole.

Though Mobius is directly based on a character from the Marvel comics, he’s only made an appearance a handful of times throughout comic history. Originally, Mobius was one of the genetically engineered identical clones of the director of the TVA, Mr. Alternity. His character was actually based on a real person named Mark Gruenwald, a longtime Marvel comics writer and editor known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel comic history.

Mobius first appeared in the Marvel comics in 1991’s Fantastic Four #353, during which he’s a junior manager at the TVA who clashes with the Fantastic Four after they’re detained for “continuity theft” — in other words, messing with the timeline. Though the crew eventually manages to escape the TVA headquarters in the Null-Time Zone, they have several other run-ins with Mobius in the comics. Throughout his storyline, Mobius gradually rises through the ranks at the TVA, eventually becoming an executive manager. In addition to his brushes with the Fantastic Four, Mobius also encounters Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk and the Kang Dynasty. One of his more memorable Marvel comics appearances outside of the Fantastic Four was in She-Hulk Vol 2 #3-5, during which Mobius serves as a TVA judge presiding over the trial of She-Hulk after she tries to warn Hawkeye about his death before it occurs.

Mobius’ relationships with She-Hulk and the Kang Dynasty could also potentially provide opportunities for him to appear in the MCU outside of Loki, as Jonathan Majors will be portraying Kang the Conquerer in the 2023 film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the MCU is currently working on a Disney+ She-Hulk series starring Tatiana Maslany.

Loki premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 9.
