Based on the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 seesplayers immersed in a world where advanced technology has led to humans being enhanced with synthetic mods and cybernetics. Following three delayed release dates, the game finally dropped on Dec. 10 but its enhanced versions for the PS5 and Xbox Series X are not yet available. So when are the next-gen console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 out in the UK?

First announced in May 2012, game developer CD Projekt Red left fans in the lurch until its initial release date was revealed during a 2019 E3 event. After being introduced by Keanu Reeves — who plays character Johnny Silverhand in-game — a trailer was shown which ended with a release date of April 16, 2020.

Two revised release dates later, in November 2020 developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) announced that Cyberpunk 2077 would be pushed back for a third time to Dec. 10. At the time, CDPR detailed “the biggest challenge” they faced was shipping the game as well as preparing and testing nine versions for current and next-gen consoles and PC. “We feel we have an amazing game on our hands and are willing to make every decision, even the hardest ones, if it ultimately leads to you getting a video game that you’ll fall in love with,” the developer said in a statement.

During this time, the PS5 and Xbox Series X were released. While players can play Cyberpunk on both the new consoles, it’s not the version specifically catered to next-gen hardware. Instead, players are experiencing upscaled PS4 and Xbox versions. Following a new statement issued by CDPR regarding the launch controversy, the developer revealed that the full next-gen versions will be made available in late 2021, and will be free for those already playing the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Despite Cyberpunk 2077 earning a record number of pre-orders and launch day sales, it’s reception hasn’t been fantastic. Current-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One have been around for almost a decade, meaning the hardware is pretty old too. Players soon found that Cyberpunk ran poorly on these consoles due to limited tech capabilities, even to the point where the game was unplayable.

The game has since received updates and patches to repair these bugs and glitches, but its nowhere near the quality promised by the CDPR. In response, the developer apologised. “We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” the wrote in a statement on Dec. 14. “We would appreciate it if you would give us a chance, but if you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy.” This then led to Sony pulling Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation store “until further notice”, citing that their priority of a “high level of customer satisfaction” as the main reasoning, per Games Radar.

Physical copies of the game are still available to buy at retailers like GAME, Amazon, and Argos. Aside from the PlayStation Store, the game is still available to buy digitally on the Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games, and Gog.com.

As for the game’s future, in their most recent update CDPR announced that along with several hotfixes, patches and updates, players can also expect free DLCs throughout 2021 and into 2022, as well as other improvements.
