Basically every Euphoria fan roots for Rue and Jules, more affectionately known as Rules, to end up together for good. But fans began to speculate that Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules on the show, was dating a different Euphoria castmate in early 2022. (Don’t feel bad for Zendaya, she’s with Tom Holland.) More than a year later, though, it seems Schafer is single again.

Schafer sparked dating rumors with singer Dominic Fike, who joined the show for Season 2, after they were spotted holding hands leaving the Nice Guy restaurant in West Hollywood on Jan. 16, 2022. Initially, neither Schafer nor Fike outwardly confirmed the rumors, but Instagram gossip account DeuxMoi posted anonymous tips claiming people had spotted Schafer and Fike, then 23 and 26, together on multiple occasions. One fan said they saw Schafer chilling backstage at one of Fike’s concerts, and another tipster claimed they were “kissing and dancing” while out at the Nice Guy (again) with Euphoria co-stars Jacob Elordi and Alexa Demie. Soon, there was not only photographic evidence of them hanging out together, but they were clearly getting romantic.

Fike took to his Instagram story on Feb. 10 to share a snap of himself and Schafer sharing a passionate kiss at a restaurant, seemingly confirming their relationship. “Happy birthday happy birthday,” he captioned the photo, though both his and Schafer’s birthdays are in December.

Months later, in a May 2022 GQ feature, Fike was even more open about their relationship, and the magazine reported that they were “very much in love.” He explained that filming emotional scenes together made their relationship progress quickly.

“In those moments, your relationship is accelerated,” he said, “because you’re so vulnerable with someone, immediately. Which usually takes a long time. Some people fall in love, like, f*cking months after they meet, or years after. We developed an attraction—it sped it up so fast. We just really got to know each other so quickly.”

The relationship ultimately came to an end, and Fike confirmed their breakup during a July 2023 Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe. “I’m just done being in relationships right now,” he said, also explaining that being codependent has been a problem for him. “That has bled into my relationships, actually, which is crazy. … And it is often the cause of, like, the end of my relationships.”

Fike further explained his breakup to the Los Angeles Times, saying he liked that that he could make music around his girlfriend. “I was looking through songs the other day and found one that I made with her,” he said. “I was like, ‘Man, that was so cool.’ But the fact of me saying that — of being uncomfortable being alone — that’s a bad thing. So I decided to just be alone for a while.”

In the show’s highly anticipated second season, which premiered on Jan. 9, 2022, Fike plays Elliot, a student who meets Rue at a New Year’s Eve party while taking drugs and subsequently saves her from a potential cardiac arrest, kicking off a new drug-fueled friendship. The following episodes see Elliot cause tension in Rue and Jules’ blossoming romance after an awkward introduction, as he forms flirtatious bonds with both of them. But after informing Jules about Rue’s relapse in Episode 4, Jules tells Rue’s mom, and they flush her drugs down the toilet, leading Rue on a vengeful tirade in Episode 5 that affects the characters’ relationships as we knew them.

Ironically, before filming with Fike, neither Schafer nor Zendaya was particularly thrilled about the introduction of Elliot. “I remember when [creator] Sam [Levinson] first kind of talked about the idea of this Elliot character, I wasn’t feeling it — as someone who ships ‘Rules’ to the bitter end,” Zendaya told Variety in a Jan. 6 interview. “I was like, ‘whoa, whoa, whoa, what are we doing here?’ But, in retrospect, and also as someone who understands where the show needs to go and what needs to happen for these characters, it’s crucial that Elliot exist and that he be the person that is honestly the catalyst for a lot of things that just have to happen.”

“I think I was in a similar boat to Z when I first heard about this Elliot boy,” Schafer added. “But, you know, as we saw more of what it brought into the story and the script, it became a more interesting and exciting prospect, and once Dom came on board, he made it a lot of fun.”

Exes Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike met while filming 'Euphoria' Season 2.

Before Schafer, Fike was in a relationship with Booksmartstar Diana Silvers. Fans speculated they broke up in July 2021 after noticing they unfollowed each other on social media and Silvers was erased from Fike’s Instagram, but it’s not known when they split. Schafer has been linked to model Massima Dee, though their relationship was never confirmed.
