Sex is best when you have good communication with a partner. But with Mercury currently moving retrograde in its home planet, Gemini, until June 22, 2021, communicating with your partner may be a little more frustrating than usual. The good news is, Mercury retrogrades don’t affect all zodiac signs in the same way. But that also means that some zodiac signs will be hit harder than others. So, how will Mercury retrograde spring 2021 affect your sex life? Astrologer Clarisse Monahan tells Bustle what each zodiac sign should know.

Mercury retrograde is happening in airy Gemini, which will make us feel more social, gossipy, flirty, and fun,” Monahan says. “However, as the planet of communication is back spinning, we may be prone to some blunders in these areas. Mercury retrograde can put a bit of a spanner in our sex lives as communication can go awry, things can be misconstrued, and communication may be unclear.”

But Mercury retrogrades aren’t just here to cause chaos. Often times, there are lessons to be learned, depending on which sign Mercury is moving backwards in.

“As this retrograde falls in cerebral Gemini, it offers us a greater sense of curiosity in sex, along with more adaptability to change and challenges,” Monahan says. “The Twins are a mutable Air sign, after all.” Mutable signs tend to be flexible and optimistic, despite any bumps in the road that come their way. So even if your zodiac sign is most likely to be affected by Mercury retrograde spring 2021, you may be able to turn things around.

Below, you’ll find out how Mercury retrograde spring 2021 will affect your sex life, based on your zodiac sign.

Aries (March 21 — April 19)

Sorry, rams. The retrograde might be “pretty severe” for you as it’s activating your Third House of Communication. “This can be making relationships hard work and wires can become very easily crossed,” Monahan says. In the bedroom, you and your partner may not be as in sync as you usually are. You may feel even more annoyed with each other than usual, and it’s not the good kind of frustration that can lead to a heated sex session. It’s the kind that may cause you or your partner to give up and put on Netflix instead. In order to prevent any tension, Monahan suggests thinking twice about what you’re saying.

Taurus (April 20 — May 20)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Bulls, Mercury is transiting your Second House of Possessions and Money. “Though this seems like a very material zone, this House also rules the body,” Monahan says. “So this three-week period can be an extremely sensual time for you.” You may be feeling a little more touchy-feely than you usually are. If you’re dating, you may have more confidence to initiate flirtatious touching on a first date.

For a Taurus, who likes to move slow and respond to situations, this is a pretty big deal. According to Monahan, Mercury retrograde spring 2021 is also a great time to take stock of your sensual wants and needs. You may even splurge on something that makes you feel “really decadent and hedonistic.”

Gemini (May 21 — June 20)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Since the retrograde is happening in your sign, naturally, it would hit you the hardest. On top of that, Mercury just happens to be your ruling planet, Gemini. According to Monahan, this can mean an extra tricky time when it comes to sex and relationships. “As this is falling in your First House of Self, pay attention to how you assert yourself,” she says. “Your partner or prospective partner may be giving you vague answers right now. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on things that are not clear.”

It’s also a good idea to be extra cautious when you’re using technology. Geminis are all for sexting. If you’re going to use your way with words to win someone over, be sure your messages are being sent to the right people. There’s nothing worse than getting a shocked reply back from mom.

Cancer (June 21 — July 22)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Cancer, Mercury retrograde is activating your 12th House of Unconsciousness. What this means is, you won’t be too in the mood to play. In fact, going out and connecting with others just doesn’t seem too appealing to you right now. Although you usually enjoy spending quality time with your significant other, you’d rather go into your shell and do your own thing. “Nothing wrong with personal play!” Monahan says.

Leo (July 23 — August 22)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

The zodiac’s energetic lion is all about having fun. But with Saturn, the planet of restriction and limitations, all over your House of Relationships this year, your sex life may have been feeling a bit strained over the last few months. According to Monahan, Saturn is a stickler. “It is not one for spontaneous throw downs or frivolous one-night stands.”

But this Mercury retrograde may offer you a little reprieve, since it’s activating your social house. According to Monahan, you may even get some light relief though connections you make with friends. “This could be an excellent time to try a friends-with-benefits arrangement,” she says. “Just make sure you are clear on your motives before ruining any preexisting acquaintanceships.”

Virgo (August 23 — September 22)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Since Mercury rules your chart, its movement backwards will impact you a lot stronger than other signs in the zodiac. “In mythology, Mercury is the Gods’ messenger, so take this time to work on your methods of communication in the realm of seduction,” Monahan says.

As a Virgo, you’re all about pleasing your partner both in and out of the bedroom. But sometimes it can mean that your needs aren’t always being met. Mercury retrograde spring 2021 is an excellent time to finesse the way you communicate your desires.

Libra (September 23 — October 22)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Mercury retrograde is currently lighting up your Ninth House of Higher Learning and Philosophy. It’s not exactly the most fun or sexual of houses, but it may trigger a need for you to understand your sexual fantasies and why you enjoy the things you do in bed.

“This is a great time to delve into any type of theory around this topic,” Monahan says. “Even better, find someone to school you on it as this is the House of Learning.” Who knows? You may even meet a special someone who has the same tastes as you.

Scorpio (October 23 — November 21)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Scorpio is all about sex. Lucky for you, Mercury is retrograde in your Eighth House of Intimacy. “This can be a great time for action, especially with partners from the past, or maybe someone you have unfinished business with,” Monahan says. You may find yourself finally taking things to the next level with someone you’ve always been into. Chances are, it’s going to be intense. Just the way you like it.

Monahan warns that it might get heavy from time to time, so try being adaptable. “Use this Gemini energy to not stay stuck in those murky waters,” she says.

Sagittarius (November 22 — December 21)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Sagittarius, spring 2021’s Mercury will directly impact your relationships. Whether you’re single or actively dating, it’s a good time to reflect on the year you’ve had to see what’s been working and what hasn’t. According to Monahan, retrogrades are for assessing and adapting. “If you are happy where you are great, but if not, this is a great time to level up,” she says. The same applies to those already in a relationship.

If you’re happy with your sex life, there’s no need to make any big changes. But if you feel like things have started to become a little dull, try new things to shake it up. You’re an adventurer, so something like a quick weekend getaway can help bring some fire back into the bedroom.

Capricorn (December 22 — January 19)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

As a Capricorn, your goals and ambitions tend to take priority over everything else in your life. This Mercury retrograde might actually be helpful for you. According to Monahan, this transit is happening in your earthy Sixth House of Routine. “Why not try and establish more of a schedule with sex?” she says. “Set a nightly or weekly sex date with your partner or yourself. The Sixth House loves consistency!”

Aquarius (January 20 — February 18)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

If you’ve been fantasizing about exes, it’s all Mercury retrograde’s doing. According to Monahan, “romance from the past” is the theme for you between now and June 22. “Whether that is someone from your past or just rekindling the desire in your current relationship, this retrograde period will be a time when you really appreciate your intimate partner more,” she says. It’s no secret that Aquarius energy can be a little cold and unromantic. But this retrograde may help to bring out your warmer side. Your partner may even be pleasantly surprised as how sweet and romantic you can actually be.

Pisces (February 19 — March 20)

Margaret Flatley/Bustle

Pisces, this Mercury retrograde may affect you in some interesting ways. According to Monahan, Mercury has been in an “intense square off” with your ruling planet, Neptune. If you’ve been feeling more down or all over the place lately, it’s due to this aspect. You can even expect for your relationships to be vague and uncentered. But it’s not all bad. “Relationships can also potentially be extremely dreamy,” Monahan says. “If so, enjoy the fantasy. The rose-tinted lens glasses come off on [June 22].”
