There are no rules when it comes to makeup. You can wear whatever makes you happy whenever you want. But there's just something about rocking a bold blush in the spring that can brighten not only your cheeks but also your mood. Plus, bold and bright makeup is totally on-trend for 2017. But if you're a little hesitant, I get it. I mean, those neon reds and hot pinks can be pretty intimidating. So if you're not quite ready to build up your blush for a statement cheek, you can still dust on a bold hue in a more understated way.

If you want to avoid being heavy-handed with your blush, there are a couple of things you can do. First, make sure to use a less densely-packed brush like a stippling brush or tapered blush-brush. If your brush isn't picking up as much pigment, it won't distribute too much color on your cheeks. Still worried you grabbbed too much product? After dipping your brush into your blush, dab it on the back of your hand before swirling it on your cheeks. This will allow you to build up your color instead of having to spend an hour blending out a heavy cheek. But whether you want your cheeks to be subtly bright or pack a punch, here are 12 bold blushes to try, according to your skin tone:

Fair To Light

Try: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Natural Beauty, $29, Sephora; Stila Convertible Color in Gladiola, $25, Stila Cosmetics; Clinique Cheek Pop in Pansy Pop, $23, Sephora; Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in Lush & Libido, $42, Sephora

Fair to light skin-tones are often in danger of accidentally loading up on blush, regardless if it's a natural or a bold hue. With these subtler shades of red, orange, purple, and pink though, you won't have to be as afraid of overdoing it on even the fairest skin.

Medium To Tan

Try: SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Face Powder in 10 Oh My Gosh, $14, Sephora; NYX Cosmetics High Definition Blush in Double Dare, $7, NYX Cosmetics; Benefit Cosmetics Lollitint Cheek & Lip Stain, $30, Benefit Cosmetics; L.A. Lights Lip & Cheek Color in Fairfax Fuchsia, $29, Smashbox

For the right amount of pop, medium to tan skin-tones may have to build up certain shades yet use a light hand with others. So if you need more middle-of-the-road options for shade intensity, look no further than these red, orange, purple, and pink picks.

Dark To Deep

Try: NARS Blush in Exhibit A, $30, Sephora; Make Up For Ever HD Blush in 515 Tangerine, $22, Make Up For Ever; Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush in Bittersweet, $26, Urban Decay; Becca Cosmetics Mineral Blush in Hyacinth, $32, Becca Cosmetics

Dark to deep skin-tones can really go bold when it comes to color intensity. While you may still want to use a lighter hand with certain shades or formulas, if you want to go all-out with your red, orange, purple, or pink blush, these ones aren't holding back when it comes to pigment.

But of course, regardless of your skin tone, you can go as bright or as muted as you want with the bold-cheek trend. Just don't be afraid to play with color, because either way your cheeks will be poppin.
