17 2017 Movies That Are Based On True Stories

If there's one thing Hollywood loves (besides superheroes) it's true stories. Of the nine films nominated for this year's Best Picture Oscar, a third of them — Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, and Hidden Figures — are based on true stories. In fact, out of the seven films that have won the Academy Award for Best Picture so far this decade, all but two of them — Birdman and The Artist — have been inspired by real events. So given the acclaim these types of films often receive, it makes sense that there are plenty of 2017 movies based on true stories that you'd want to see.

There are several "based on a true story" movies hitting theaters in 2017, and a good number of them definitely seem like the type of film that awards shows go gaga over. There are films based on major events, including several about World War II, Hollywood's longtime go-to for real life drama. There are also a number of biopics about famous people from history, including important African American icons like Tupac Shakur and Thurgood Marshall, as well as some heroic women whose stories are not well known, such as Catherine Weldon and Antonia Zabinska (both played by Jessica Chastain). So check out these 17 2017 movies that are all based on true tales.
