32 Action Movies You Have To See This Year

Warner Bros. Pictures

The next year promises to be a big one at the movie theater. 2016 set a new record for box office revenue, with $11.37 billion in receipts for the year, and it did so largely on the backs of massive action movies from franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and the DCEU. This year looks to be even more successful, thanks to a ton of 2017 action movies you're going to want to see. In addition to the previously-mentioned franchises all debuting new films, other moneymaking machines like Fast & Furious, Transformers, and Pirates of the Caribbean are returning as well, plus loads of other great looking adrenaline-fueled films.

While many of these movies are the huge-budgeted blockbusters fans have come to expect when they think of action movies, there are a number of smaller actioners as well. Sequels to John Wick and The Kingsman should satisfy those who root for underdog franchises, while films from directors like Guy Ritchie, Edgar Wright, and Denis Villeneuve will appeal to fans of auteurs. Plus, there are an unusually high number of female-led action flicks coming out this year, which hopefully signifies a growing trend in Hollywood. So take a look below at the 32 most-anticipated action movies coming out in 2017.

1

‘XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage’

This looks like the most bonkers movie ever made.

2

‘Logan’

This might not just be the best X-Men movie ever, it could be the best superhero movie ever.

3

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 2’

I don't know if I've ever been more excited for a sequel.

4

‘Wonder Woman’

Wonder Woman finally gets her own movie, and it looks fantastic.

5

‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’

This franchise doesn't get enough credit for being a successful female-led action series. This sixth(!) entry is the final one, so enjoy it while it lasts.

6

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Spider-Man comes home to Marvel, in what will hopefully be the most comics-accurate Peter Parker to ever hit the big screen.

7

‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

The franchise that refuses to die is back with an appropriately undead new villain played by Javier Bardem.

8

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’

The fifth installment in this other unheralded female-led action franchise.

9

‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Thor and Hulk team up for an intergalactic buddy road comedy. How could anyone not want to see that?

10

‘Kong: Skull Island’

This looks considerably more exciting than the last venture King Kong made to cinemas.

11

‘Alien: Covenant’

In 2017, no one can hear you scream.

12

‘The Fate Of The Furious’

Does it look insane? Yup. Will it make a billion dollars? Yup.

13

‘War For The Planet Of The Apes’

Just in case the last two Planet of the Apes movies weren't intense enough for you.

14

‘John Wick: Chapter 2’

John Wick quickly became a cult favorite in 2014, which led to this surprise sequel.

15

‘Blade Runner 2049’

Is 35 years too long to wait for a sequel? Fans will find out in October.

16

‘The Dark Tower’

Columbia Pictures

Stephen King, whose had roughly 340 of his books made into movies (slight exaggeration), finally sees his most ambitious effort get the blockbuster treatment.

17

‘Transformers: The Last Knight’

More CGI insanity from Michael Bay.

18

‘The Mummy’

The new Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe will launch with a bang or a thud, but I'm definitely hoping for the former.

19

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’

Kingsman: Secret Service was one of the best action movies of the decade, which means this sequel has some big shoes to fill.

20

‘Jumanji’

The reboot looks to ramp up the action of the '90s classic considerably, thanks in large part to the presence of The Rock.

21

‘Renegades’

J.K. Simmons is the biggest name in the cast of this war movie, but when has that ever been a bad sign?

22

‘King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword’

A King Arthur movie from Guy Ritchie. Action fans, get your tix now.

23

'Power Rangers'

These are not the Power Rangers you remember.

24

‘The Commuter’

Liam Neeson plays an ordinary man pushed beyond his limit. Alternate title: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It.

25

‘Dunkirk’

Everything Christopher Nolan does is a must-see, and this is no exception.

26

‘Justice League’

DC fans finally get their own version of The Avengers; now they just have to hope that it's good.

27

‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson are a bodyguard and a hitman, respectively, who have to team up in this action comedy.

28

‘Baywatch’

You are not mistaken, 2017 will be the year of The Rock.

29

‘Baby Driver’

TriStar Pictures

This heist movie has chase scenes set to music, which should make for a nice change of pace.

30

‘Ghost In The Shell’

The action sequences here look incredible, which is largely due to Scarlett Johansson, who is massively underrated as an action star.

31

‘Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets’

And the award for craziest action movie in 2017 goes to...

32

'Star Wars: Episode VIII'

Walt Disney Pictures

Going to go out a limb here and predict that this will be the biggest movie of 2017. I know, I'm a risk taker.
