A 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Holiday Special? Yes, Please

by Amy Roberts

You know, if there's one thing I'm certain of, it's that you shouldn't toy with people's emotions. But sadly, friends, our emotions are being played with. On Friday, James Gunn teased a Guardians Of The Galaxy holiday special on Twitter, and I don't think he was being totally serious. After all, as observed by the website Bleeding Cool, Gunn is kind of notorious for making ridiculous statements on social media which then get picked up by media outlets and reported as "fact." And this unfortunately looks like it could be another case of that. But whatever, consider me baited, good sir. Because I want to believe.

When asked by a fan whether he'd thought of making a Guardians Of The Galaxy holiday special for ABC in the future (supposedly in the iconic spirit of the hilariously misfired Star Wars Holiday Special), Gunn responded, "Honestly? Yes. I talk about this all the time with Kevin Feige. We both find the idea fun and funny." So, I mean, is that a yes? Or, is this just a joke? I don't know about you but I have such a hard time gauging sarcasm online.

Whatever the case may be, I think there's something that Gunn needs to hear, and that's that a potential Guardian's Of The Galaxy holiday special is no joke, my friend. None at all. In fact, it'd be pretty damn awesome.

Those of you who still enjoy getting festive while enjoying the strange, campy delights of the Star Wars Holiday Special will know exactly what I mean. While most big budget, mainstream movies could never in a million years pull off such a venture, Guardians Of The Galaxy definitely could. In fact, it's pretty much tailor-made for such a wonder.

As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians Of The Galaxy is something else. Tonally, it shares little in common with most other Marvel properties currently receiving the cinematic treatment. It's lewd, crude, and it absolutely plays by its own rules. I mean, where else could you ever hope to see a hero attempting to win a battle with a (very impressive, I must say) dance off? Or a character who follows up a feat of stunning self-sacrifice with a rousing Jackson 5 session? Exactly.

But when you consider how much of a prominent role Star-Lord's Earth roots took on in the first Guardians movie (mix tape volume 1 is a damn masterpiece, guys), then it's easy to see how a holiday special could be crafted. Perhaps Star-Lord still harbors a sweet memory of Christmas and of the Star Wars Holiday Special from when he was a kid, and desperately wants to relive it in some way. Cue him forcing the rest of the gang to endure some painful sing-alongs, loved-up speeches, and a civilized feast to enjoy together. What could possibly go wrong?

I mean, that's just my take on it, anyway. But I still really want this to be reality. Whether Gunn was actually being legitimately serious with his response, or whether he was just messing with our collective heart, remains to be seen, I guess. But I live in hope, you guys.
