'The Last Jedi' Is Leaving Fans With An Intriguing Question About Rey & Kylo Ren

by Mathew Jedeikin

Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you've seen The Last Jedi, then you probably have a lot of questions — and you're not the only one. One such question fans are wondering is whether Rey and Kylo Ren are twins. And if not, are they related in some way? Well, if we are to believe everything that Kylo Ren (aka Ben Solo) says in The Last Jedi out right, then the easy answer is no, they are not twins. However, there's a reason fans are curious.

There was definitely ambiguity in the words Kylo Ren used when he revealed Rey's parentage to her, and there are certainly hints in the film that Rey and Kylo Ren share a similar relationship to Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa, who are in fact twins. Add to that quotes from director Rian Johnson that seem to leave the door open for developments in the next film, and really, it's pretty much all up in the air.

In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren attempts to lure Rey to the dark side by revealing what he saw in a vision about her parents. He claims that Rey's parents were junkies from Jakku who sold her for drinking and gambling money. "You have no place in this story," Ben taunts Rey. "You come from nothing. You are nothing." Now, it could be easy to dismiss what Kylo Ren says, because hey, he's the bad guy, and The Last Jedi gives us a number of reasons to believe that Rey is somehow related to Ben. However, in a recent interview with Bustle, the film's writer and director explained that Kylo Ren was being sincere about what he knows about Rey's parents.

"I don’t think he's lying in that moment," Johnson told Bustle's Kelsea Stahler. "I think he is like telling what he saw and I think that Rey seems like she believes it in that moment." He then claimed it was an "honest revelation," and not "a move in a game of chess." However, what he said next left the door open for that all to change. Johnson continued,

"Now as we know in these movies, you know the whole idea of a certain point of view comes into play and as you know I'm not involved in writing the next movie. J.J. [Abrams] and Chris [Terrio] are writing it so, I want to make it clear I'm not sure how it's going to get resolved. For me the important part was saying it was an emotionally honest revelation, I feel like it, I don't know, I believed it."

Some fans however, are still convinced that Rey and Ben are related, and they're citing the ambiguity in what Kylo Ren said to Rey. He doesn't specifically identify who were parents were, and even if she was left by two people raising her on Jakku, that doesn't mean they were her birth parents. Star Wars movies do have a history of splitting up twins. Remember Luke and Leia didn't initially know they were twins?

That isn't the only parallel between Luke and Leia's relationship and Kylo Ren and Rey's relationship in The Last Jedi though. Throughout the film, we see Rey and Kylo Ren communicating telepathically across the galaxy, which isn't necessarily that common. The only other time we've seen this happen in a Star Wars film was when Luke communicated with Leia telepathically at the end of The Empire Strikes Back.

Making matters even more confusing, in the Star Wars Legends universe, which is not part of the theatrical Star Wars universe, Han Solo and Leia had twins named Jaina and Jacen Solo. Jania was a Jedi, and her brother Jacen went to the dark side and became Darth Caedus. See the similarities between Ben and Rey?

However, as a lot of people have noticed there's definitely romantic tension between Rey and Kylo Ren, so perhaps they won't end up being related at all? Or this could be another example of a parallel with Luke and Leia, who were part of a love triangle with Han Solo before it was revealed that they were twins. Right now though, it seems like we'll have to wait until Dec. 20, 2019 (when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters) to find out more.
