Laverne Cox & 'Drag Race's Peppermint Are Total Friendship Goals

by Amy Roberts

If you're the sort of person who finds yourself sniffling at the slightest whiff of emotion on TV, then the RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9 finale likely had you batting tears from your eyes and shouting, "It's my allergies, honest." Spoilers ahead. Whether it was the inspiring short speech by made by Drag Race Season 9 winner Sasha Velour, or Shea Couleé's emotional admission about her tough, grief stricken year, the finale was full of heart-clutching moments. And one such moment involved the apparent friendship between Peppermint and Laverne Cox.

In a pre-recorded message, Cox, who's best known for her role as Sophia in Orange Is The New Black and her amazing activism for transgender rights, offered her love and support to Peppermint. She said,

"I am so proud of you, girl. You have been my sister for so many years, and that has made it that much sweeter watching you shine, showing the world that being a proud transgender woman is not incompatible with being America's next drag superstar. You can have them both. I love you peppermint, I love you Drag Race. Shantay, you will always stay in my heart."

Peppermint might have been the runner-up of the Drag Race finale, but it's clear she won on the friendship front. Just look at all this love:

As Drag Race's first openly transgender contestant to compete on the show, Peppermint has repeatedly provided a voice to transgender struggles within society, as well as the importance of continuing to fight for transgender rights. As a celebrity transgender activist herself, Cox has also continually uses her platform as an actor and performer to support transgender rights.

So it makes sense that these two powerful women would also be terrific friends. And you'll probably wish you could grab an invite to their one of their hangouts, like this fun, recent shot of the two in London.

Though there's little online that suggests exactly how these two incredible women know each other, what's perhaps more important is how sweet and formidable their power is as friends. In March, for instance, Peppermint and Cox were featured in Mila Jam's "Faces" video, alongside some of today's leading queer voices such as Tituss Burgess, Candis Cayne, and Transparent's Trace Lysette (who was also in the audience supporting Peppermint during the Drag Race finale).

Meanwhile, in March, after the Season 9 Drag Race premiere, Cox tweeted in excitable support of her friend, revealing her unequivocal loyalty by doing so.

Their supportive friendship will officially make you want to call up all of your own strong, dependable, and loyal friends right now and show them some love, too. Thanks, ladies.
