Sorry, Marvel Fans: Chris Hemsworth's Thor Exit Could Mean The End Of The "Super Chrises"

All good things must come to an end, but knowing that the end is inevitable doesn't necessarily make the news sting any less. And speaking of conclusions, Chris Hemsworth is finished playing Marvel's Thor after Avengers 4, according a new USA Today interview. Unfortunately, this means that the Super Chrises' Marvel reign may have a deadline in the near future.

Hemsworth first took on the role in 2011, starring in the Marvel film Thor. Over the past seven years, the Australian actor's character has been featured in slew of other Marvel-themed movies, such as The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Thor: Ragnarok. According to the recent interview, Hemsworth's Marvel contract is up after the untitled sequel to the 2018 slated Marvel film Avengers: Infinity Wars. "Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it," Hemsworth told USA Today. "I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again."

"This really seemed like this never-ending thing," he continued, and yeah, fans will totally agree. It's been a pleasure watching the actor reprise the role, and, well, saying goodbye is going to be pretty tough, especially when fans are finally going to get to see all three Chrises on the big screen,together.

The expected, yet unexpected news of Hemsworth's Marvel exit comes just months before Pratt and Evans make their Super Chrises debut all in one film. It was announced that actors Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in the MCU, and Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill/Star-Lord, are going to be joining Hemsworth in both Avengers: Infinity Wars and the untitled 2019 sequel, officially making the "Three Chrises," also known as "Super Chrises," a real thing.

Needless to say, once the trailer for Avengers: Infinity Wars was released, the excitement surrounding the Chrises presence took Twitter by storm.

And once the word gets out about Hemsworth's contract coming to its inevitable end in 2019, hearts are definitely going to break.

According to Screenrant, Marvel contracts typically require multi-film commitments with MCU stars, such as Evans and Hemsworth, being contractually obligated to complete six to eight. However, contracts can sometimes be extended as long as possible. In Evans' case, the Captain America actor originally signed on to star in six Marvel films, but has stayed on longer to contribute to the untitled Avengers sequel. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained, "I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter."

So, could this mean that Hemsworth will choose to continue his presence in the MCU after the 2019 Avengers movie? Just maybe. According to the USA Today interview, after the success of Ragnarok, the actor made tentative plans to flesh out the Thor story arc in a potential Thor 4. "I felt like we re-invented him," Hemsworth said of Ragnarok's Thor. The actor brought in the New Year with the film's director Taika Waititi, and together the two thought of all of the possibilities to further develop Hemsworth's famed character. Right now, however, the focus for the studio is to get the next Avengers films out of the way, Hemsworth noted, and then after, "It’s a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen."

Don't go throwing out those "Hail the Super Chrises" posters just yet, because as Hemsworth put it, the door may not be completely shut on Thor's future. But until actual plans to continue popping up on the Marvel screen, have been released, fans can look forward to seeing the Three Chrises in Infinity Wars and 2019's untitled sequel.
