It was always a foregone conclusion that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen would find a way to join forces on this season of Game of Thrones. After all — spoiler alert — Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke were seen filming alongside one another in Belfast. But thanks to "Stormborn," the second episode of Season 7, fans of the show finally know just how it's going to happen: Daenerys has officially invited Jon Snow to Dragonstone for a chance to become her ally, not the other way around.

After Daenerys finally returned to her ancestral home of Dragonstone in the season premiere, I assumed that it would be Jon Snow, not her, who first proposed some kind of alliance. After all, Samwell Tarly just learned at the Citadel that the island is home to a large deposit of dragonglass, which is the only substance known to be able to kill White Walkers. Since Jon Snow's ultimate goal is to protect Westeros from what lies beyond the wall, he's going to need some of that dragonglass (and some Valyrian steel, forged with dragonfire) to supply his armies.

Instead, it was Daenerys who extended the first invitation, and Jon has Melisandre, whom he kicked out of Winterfell last season, to thank for it. Turns out that the Red Priestess' priorities are similar to Jon Snow's, in that she's also concerned with keeping the White Walkers confined — and she believes that the Prince Who Was Promised (or Princess, depending on your grammatical translation) will be instrumental in combating the impending darkness.

And who, exactly, is that Prince? Melisandre's gotten it wrong before (R.I.P. Stannis), but now she seems pretty convinced it's either Daenerys or Jon Snow. In any case, she also believes Daenerys needs to help Jon Snow in his quest to stop the White Walkers, so that one of them can be the Lord's chosen Warrior of Light. Remembering their time together on the Kingsroad to the Night's Watch six seasons ago, Tyrion vouches for Snow and offers to send Winterfell a letter of friendship — and judging with how Jon Snow's decided to go to Dragonstone himself, he's strongly considering the offer. (Gotta love that Dany was clear that Jon would still have to bend the knee to her, though.)

Unfortunately, it'll be at least another episode before the fateful meeting between Jon Snow and Daenerys can actually take place. But after seven seasons of watching Game of Thrones and wondering when any of these characters are actually going to hang out, I guess fans can wait one more week.
