Lord Commander Dolorous Edd's Watch Hasn't Ended Yet, 'Game Of Thrones' Fans

The Wall came down in the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones, but that doesn't mean that the Night's Watch is off duty just yet. In an interview with Chronicle Live promoting men's health awareness, actor Ben Crompton revealed that Lord Commander Dolorous Edd will be in Game of Thrones Season 8. This may not seem like big news on the surface, but it reveals that despite the Night's King and his army bringing down the Wall, the Night's Watch will still have some sort of role to play in the final season.

It's important to remember that the White Walkers chose a portion of the Wall that was out of the way in order to begin their march on Westeros. As Crompton explained in his interview,

"Eastwatch has been penetrated, that's the one by the sea, so Eastwatch is broken. Edd is manning Castle Black."

Despite the carnage in the finale, that means there are still men of the Night's Watch alive. You can bet they'll either be the first people south of the Wall to face the White Walkers, or they'll be heading to Winterfell to help Jon and the rest of the North deal with the coming threat. Fingers crossed that Edd will live long enough to reunite with Jon.

Filming on Season 8 began in October, so it's still early days yet, but Crompton did reveal that he was at the script read-through that his co-star Kit Harington mentioned last month. That means that whether or not he makes to it to the final episode, at least Edd knows how the story ends.

While he was appearing on the British chat series, The One Show, Harington discussed the emotional table read of the final season. He said,

"I cried at the end! It wasn't anything particular that happens. You have to remember, I've done eight years of it. I think, no one really cares about [Game of Thrones] more than us… It's been an institution longer than any other institution I've been in. School, drama school, anything."

Crompton didn't mention whether or not he teared up during the reading, but he did reveal that fans are in for some exciting television. "I can just tell you it's brilliant — honestly there's a couple of things there that are like nothing else that’s been seen on telly," Crompton told the site. And since this is Game of Thrones, there's no reason to believe the actor is exaggerating.

After all, the hit series has made a practice of topping itself with each new season, and despite Season 8 consisting of just six episodes, all signs point to it being the biggest year yet. (Which explains why it may not air until 2019.)

The wait may feel even longer for some fans because Season 7's final scene left two important characters in peril: Tormund and Beric Dondarrion. There has been much debate about whether or not the two men, who were both at Eastwatch, survived Viserion's attack on the Wall. Fans have reason to hope that they made it out of the Wall's collapse alive though. Kristofer Hivju, the actor who plays Tormund, was recently spotted in Belfast, which is where a large portion of Game of Thrones is filmed. That's not confirmation that Tormund survives, but it's better than nothing.

At this point, when spoilers for Season 8 are still scarce and the long winter between seasons is just getting started, every morsel of information matters. Even though Crompton doesn't reveal anything major in his interview, just knowing that the de facto Lord Commander will be around to drop a few more dour quips before the series ends is something.

The Night's Watch has been an important part of Game of Thrones since the very beginning, and it just wouldn't be right for the series to end without letting the fans bid Edd and his companions one final farewell.
