Finally, Some Good News For Fitzsimmons Fans On 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

ABC/Jennifer Clasen

Hang the "curse" that's kept Fitz and Simmons apart on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and turned them into a "will they or can they" instead of won't they. Finally, finally these two aren't moping about, wasting precious moments, or separated by time and/or space. Fitz and Simmons are engaged on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and while they're not out of the woods yet, fans just let out a huge sigh of relief — while probably also jumping for joy.

Fitz has just woken up from his 80 year nap and gets thrown into the world of being a "marauder" alongside Enoch on a mission to buy back Daisy. The second Fitz gets a moment with Simmons, he tells her not to turn around and starts a huge, swoon-worthy speech.

“I’ve missed you so much," he says. "You know, I spent six months locked up in an off-the-books military prison, not mention 80 years frozen in space, all just hoping to find you. Here you are. You know, I realized something. The universe can’t stop us because we have crossed galaxies, we have traveled through time, we survived the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean just so we can be together. A love like that, that is stronger than any curse, and you and I? We are unstoppable together. I don’t want to live another day without you. So Jemma Simmons, will you marry me?”

Perfect, right? You clearly don't know what it's like to root for this couple. There's no way that romantic overture was going to go smoothly. It may seem like Jemma is complying with Fitz's clandestine plan, but she actually can't hear him. Kassius' device is restricting her hearing, and they get interrupted several times after that, never able to really talk or do more than.

Then, at the end of the episode, FitzSimmons finally get to break away from the action, the two of them do an abbreviated version of the above proposal. Instead of making a big speech, Fitz just says "I'm never leaving you again" and kisses her. It's not like he actually left Simmons, of course. None of this is his fault. Anyway, Jemma responds with "then marry me, Fitz" and he says "absolutely." It's quick, simple, and fitting, after all of this time.

Fitz does tell Simmons that he proposed to her (first) earlier, when her weird monitor was on. "Of course you did," she says. It wouldn't be FitzSimmons without some farcical bad timing and missed communication. They're getting married! Hooray! Ignore the fact that they're all still in danger, and Fitz saw a prophecy in which Simmons dies. Surely they can take care of all that. Let them have this happy news for once.

Also, this episode was directed by Clark Gregg himself, according to TVLine! Of course he'd want to be in charge of this major 'shipping milestone. “I said, ‘Look, just give me something big to swing at with this episode," Clark said in an interview with TVLine. "'That’s all I care about,’ and they were like, ‘OK.’ And then, oh my god, I had two giant fights, and two big proposals.”

After almost five whole seasons, it really goes feel like we've grown up with these two characters. Seeing them get engaged feels like watching two friends take the leap together — and most of our friends weren't trapped on Maveth or seduced by robot women. “I was excited about that because as a fan of those two," continued Clark in the same interview. "They’ve just been through so much. And they’re both such amazing actors, I just knew that even given all the weird constraints put on the first proposal, they would knock it out of the park and break out hearts. And I love that that heavy, frustrating first proposal gets followed up by the role-reversing, funnier one!”

It's a little bit insane that, even in 2018, seeing a female character propose on television is still so different — but that doesn't make Simmons' proposal any less appreciated. What's great about Fitz and Simmons is that they are equal partners, through and through. That makes this double proposal not only comical, but kind of perfect.
